  • Moving (learning) at a different Pace – 30 day challenge

I’m doing the 10 minutes a day (closer to 30 minutes), but I’m not developing my skills at the course’s pace. For example, the blues boogie is a real challenge and I can tell it’s going to take me weeks or possibly months to learn this one properly.

So do I slow down or just progress through the materials and hopefully get more proficient along the way?

Welcome to TAC. The 30 day challenge a starting point to jump into the daily challenges that will come later. Do what you can and mark them complete as you move through the lessons.

When you begin the Daily Challenges, you’ll find the week will be broken down as follows: Techniques, Licks, Scales/Improv, Rhythm, and Chord Transition. The skills you’re learning in the 30 day section will repeat themselves in the future lessons. Also, heads up – you won’t be mastering these lessons in the beginning. Just do the best you can and in time you’ll see improvement. There are benchmark songs scattered throughout the year to measure your progress. So right now, practice but not to the point of frustration and enjoy the journey.

I know others will weigh in and again welcome to great community!

As TerryG said; each day you do that challenge as best you can for whatever period of time you decide to practice; then move on. Each week you will be going through the 5 essential skills. The specific lessons may be different from week to week (though as she mentioned, some repeat); but the skills and techniques you are learning do repeat through the various lessons every week. You will see that in time, your skill in each area increases. You will surprise yourself.

When I first started, the thought of doing a whole song half way decent by memory; whether chords, finger picking, or flat picking; seemed impossible. Through developing my skill in the techniques taught weekly; I am able to do so now. It builds over time with consistency and sticking with the process. I was so encouraged when I could play through the many chords of Hotel California (with bass lead ins), in a proper order, and with decent timing. It hit me that though it seemed like I was not gaining much at times day to day; it was indeed happening. Enjoy the journey, and you will see you can play.

Following up to Philb and TerriG’s responses: Is this the same for the TAC weekly challenges? If I could only do 2 of the 5 challenges and not even try 3 of them for a week (due to traveling) should I go back to them on the next Monday or start the new challenge?

New challenge. I never have to worry about keeping track. Having Tony P means I get to do what is in presently in front of me knowing that time in the saddle is what I need to progress; less thinking about strategy and more doing if you will. Everything is related…it is all a big circle.

It depends on the challenge and your taste. There are certain songs that Tony introduces where you might want to explore then do the entire week (or at least “favorite” the lessons you missed so you can access them later). If the prior week lesson doesn’t thrill you, then start the new challenge that is introduced on the Monday. You don’t have to do them all if you have a time constraint. I like doing the Techniques, Licks, & Rhythm Guitar. FYI, these lessons will repeat – some within four months or some after a year, so you’ll see them again.

Don’t worry about keeping it to 30 days, it took me over two months before I felt ready to move on!

It’s natural to think that you must complete (=execute everything taught in the challenge perfectly, or at least to some degree). Try to allow yourself to approach learning in a different way: give the lesson your best effort you can in 10 maybe up to 30 minutes. You will probably see quickly that all can’t be learned but try to take away something. You might not get that skill the way you would like but maybe something you were trying to do last week (or month) is suddenly doable. Maybe you learned something about the guitar or something about music you didn’t know. Any small thing can be a win, then come to the forums and report your wins! This will reinforce your learning and other members’ in TAC! I always find something has advanced or something was gained. There are days when I will go back and rehearse previous challenges. I will usually have 2 – 3 (often more) sessions every day of 3 – 10 minutes each. Take the guitar on your TV couch with you and just practice transitioning between chord shapes.
