Mr Lennon
Posted by vinny-m-327 on March 26, 2026 at 4:37 amThis weeks Tuesday challenge, Mr. Lennon. I am struggling to make the hammer on off the double stops I can’t make that stretch holding down the two strings on it. Am I supposed to. Is there something to help develop that ability. Or should I just pick up the index finger for that hammer on?

It’s a pretty good stretch…much better as you move up to the 5th and 7th frets. My advice would be to get your index finger as close as possible to the fret, and to press as lightly as you can to still have the 2 strings ring out ( we all tend to press way too hard when we “barre” more than one string ). Practice on the higher frets where they aren’t so far apart and then move back to the 3rd fret gradually. Good luck !

What Gary says here bears repeating, we all tend to press too hard when we barre more than one string. This was my key to getting my bar chords to ring. I found I was pressing strings too hard that were already covered and this took the wind out of the precision pressure needed for clear bars. That advice on pressing as lightly as possible to make your bar ring clearly is Solid Gold

All you can do is try to do it the best you can. I am almost 2 years in this program and I can’t do this hammer without muting the lower string. I am a closer to hitting it if I use my pinky. It’s not that consequential since we are following up with another double stop. I’ll keep trying to do this, I know eventually I’ll get it like so many other moves that seemed impossible early on but now are totally in my wheelhouse!

Some things that help me learn hammers ons. All of us had issues with and all of us have different finger palm wrist joints so we had to find what would work for us.
How much of your palm/ finger joint is above the treble side of the Fret Board? I can see all of my palm finger joint when I do hammers. This gives you a better downward angle to hammer the fret clean and true with out hitting any other strings.
Where is your thumb located on the back of the neck?
If I am going to hammer on 2 or 3 frets further up the neck my thumb usually is located between the Fretted note and the fret I am going to be hammering down on. Sometimes the thumb is located in the middle arch of the neck and sometimes located more up on the bass side of the back of the neck. This depends on how close to the fret board/neck I need to position my palm. Short fingers need to have the palm close or resting on the fret board edge. Longer finger not so much. If I place my palm too close to the fret board edge i have a harder time being accurate with my finger down stroke to the fretted area.If you use hammer on’s, pull offs slides, slur’s long enough and a lot it will just become natural.
