My TAC routine
<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>1.) How many days per week do you play?
In my 2nd year in TAC I will now play 5 days a week for 10 minute or more of TAC lessons Monday thru Friday. In addition, I’ll pick up my old standby songs and play a lot more if I need to play for church, which is about once every 3 months.
2.) What time of day do you play?
I play morning, day or night. While it’s not a dialed in routine, it’s usually before or after a meal, since the guitar is near the kitchen.
3.) Where do you play?
I play in the computer room off the kitchen. That’s where I keep my guitar on a stand, guitar music, picks, foot stool for playing, charger for phone to use for tuning the guitar, and of course printer and paper for printing the tabs for each lesson.
4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
Before I played in binges. When I joined TAC last year, I didn’t establish the daily routine and was playing catch up or not playing guitar at all. It was impossible to keep up and felt like an un-win-able battle. I made a huge push and did like 6 lessons a day for a period of time, trying to catch up. I finally caught up, then immediately started to back slide because I didn’t have an easy peasy routine! (I know that in hind sight). So I heard Tony pitch the 10 minute daily practice until it finally clicked! What finally worked is that I started by writing (yes in pencil, on the pages of my calendar) ’10 min Tony’ so I could check it off daily. It worked!! I don’t write it down anymore. The first week of being caught up, I remember thinking I can take a break this weekend, after playing a tiny bit each week day. It almost felt like cheating!! it was too easy. The repercussions are wonderful! I’ve started to apply the concept of doing a little bit each day to accomplish big tasks. The stress level goes down too b/c I’m on a journey to doing things and at the end of the day, I can say yeah, I’m doing it, no sweat. Tomorrow I’ll tackle another small chunk.
– “Regular and dependable progress has to be my number 1 here. Due to the consistency I feel myself getting better every day, which creates this wonderful momentum that perpetuates my routine.” Yes Tony this is true for me too!
– A consistent routine has helped me enjoy my guitar so much that I can’t wait to play it. My guitar is part of my identity and brings me so much joy and comfort.
– I’ve also gained confidence for playing guitar and singing at church. I still get nervous, but feel that my guitar skill is the anchor as I work to improve other things like sound technology, my voice and singing/playing at the correct time.
5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
My phone is a must. It has a phone app for tuning the guitar. There’s times my sound is just off, and I feel like I’m messing up. When I tune the guitar, and strum a basic chord it sounds like magic, no lie. I’m not perfect, but my perfectly tuned guitar is! 99% of the time, my routine starts with tuning the guitar. If it’s not tuned, there isn’t any kind of playing, fancy or plain, that sounds good at all.
