  • Newbie, First Benchmark – Old Man

Joined in Oct, completed the 30 day and 5 day routines plus one of the weekly challenges, then Old Man popped up for my first benchmark experience. Super exciting as it’s a long-time favorite. Struggled and hacked my way through the week. It was rough but inspiring and I look forward to getting better – my brain and my fingers need to decide to work together! Small wins: got better with hammer-ons (thumb behind the neck really helped), plus occasionally my playing briefly sounded like the actual song. Tempo and consistency need lots of improvement but hopefully that will come in time. The TAC approach really resonates with me so I’m optimistic.

Kudos to all of you regular commenters – it took me a while to work up the nerve to post! Happy New Year everyone.

That’s the way you do it. Keep going! Do the best you can; enjoy the journey; don’t stress over slowness, imperfection, etc.; and you will see improvement. It creeps up on you. Consistency pays off; even at 10 minutes a day. I know I ended up spending more time many days, and venturing into other areas; but that is okay also. Keep well!

@JonnyGee please don’t hesitate to post in the forum! Everyone here is very friendly and willing to help. Most (if not all) have gone through everything you’re experiencing right now and are able to give you good guidance.

My first benchmark was Old Man also and I had to settle for doing small portions of the daily challenges. The F mini was a total no go, didn’t really get that under grips until about the 4th repeat and it’s still being improved. I also couldn’t do the folk G, so all those mods were out.

Little by little all these parts start falling into place though, this program works!
