  • Nylon String Electric?

Posted by petelanger on September 6, 2025 at 9:11 am

So I was yesterday years old when I learned that you could have an electric guitar with nylon strings! At first I’m shocked, how can electric work on nylon. Pickups are magnetic so they respond to the vibration of the metal strings. Of course it must be possible to develop a pickup that responds to sound. In fact this has been possible for a long time, they probably utilize either piezo or transducer pickups as opposed to magnetic.

I thought to myself: “How fun must that be?”. It’s got to be so much more playable since you already have lower action on electrics and then nylon is so much easier on the fingers. I’m going to resist the temptation to buy one now, I think it’s good for me to keep on improving technique on less forgiving gear and graduated to nylon strings when I have earned the right.

I have an electric Fender acoustic guitar which should be strung only with nylon strings. There are two basic pick-ups which work with nylon strings.

One is the Piezo Pickups: These are typically mounted under the bridge saddle. When nylon strings vibrate, they transfer energy to the bridge, causing the piezo crystal to generate an electrical signal. This signal is sent to an amplifier. The other is the Microphone Pickups: These capture the sound waves produced by the vibrating nylon strings and the guitar’s body, converting them into an electrical signal.

The signal from either pickup type is often processed through a preamp to boost the output and shape the tone, as nylon-string guitars produce a softer, warmer sound compared to steel-string guitars.

Don’t make it hard on yourself. If you see an advantage and a path to success that is shorter….you gotta take it. I say play on that nylon string electric. It will have no bad side effects. What you know you know. You take it with you. You may be the worlds best nylonstring electric player. I say you better find out! : ) +1 is the right amount of guitars for a guitarsenal.
