4th time around, maybe be 5th? The rhythm is easy, the percussion is not. If I want to hit the fret with the strings I have to really whack them, and my guitar does not have high action. But also, my fingers slip between the strings, I can’t accurately aim for them, and it just goes thwp; should I shorten the nails on my picking hand? It sounds more consistent if I just aim for the butt end of the fretboard with my fingernails, but I think a more metallic sound is what Tony is going for.

I’m not sure @BarbaraM . BTW it’s 4 time through for me also. In the beginning the timing was crazy hard for me, but now it’s coming so much easier as I have learned where to place each finger when it’s just standing by waiting for the next move.

My focus has always been more on the percussive plucks than the “slap” which I kind of just did with a lot less thought. For me it just works, I rarely will push the strings down to hit the frets, the noise for me comes mainly from my nails hitting the strings. I don’t think it matters terribly much, the sound of the percussive strike is going to vary based on your instrument. 🙂

I wasn’t sure what you meant by “percussive plucks”, but I tried it by laying down my pinky across the strings on my fretting hand while doing the 3-finger pluck, and it works. But I can’t do it fast, so the triplet part may have to be sacrificed.

Yes, using the pinky finger is how I’ve been doing it. I posted a video in the benchmark progress forum.
