I have not seen the message, “Please go back and complete the previous challenge.” before this morning.

As a general rule, I use my daily practice to tackle “today’s” challenge. If I feel I have completed it, I mark it complete. If I feel there is more I would like to do, I leave it, perhaps until the weekend, marking it complete when it seems appropriate.

This allows me to use the list of challenges and the completion ticks to track the challenges I need to go back to.

Today, “Wallflower” will not allow me to complete it unless I first go back to “High School Prom” and complete that first, which I am not ready to do yet.

Does anyone else find this goes against the idea of “small wins”? I have always regarded completing a challenge as acknowledgement (to myself) of a small win, even it that simply means I have had a good crack at it. Now I have to mark things as complete just because they come before something else that I want to complete.

Please comment. Perhaps I am mistaken or simply missing something but this is not helping me on my guitar journey.

In the context of our lessons “Complete” means you have given it a go for 10 min. You can assign any personal definition you find beneficial. For the purpose of the lessons the 10 minute effort is the key. If you have done your 10 min click “complete”. When you favorite a lesson, you can go back to it as long as that lesson remains in your favorites. I will often use Mondays warm-up lesson all week long before doing the lesson of the day. In this case I don’t favorite the given warm-up but rather I access it once I have gotten to the lesson of the day and pressed start. I just pause it and use the lesson list on the left side of the screen to go back to the Monday warm-up.

I have a practice routine where I play the lessons for 10 mins or so. But I do that every day over about 5-6-7 different days. So- every day, I move that day’s- (new)- lesson “in”, and move the “oldest”- (5 or 6 days old)- “out”. An “out with the old, in with the new” thing.

Only issue is that at the very first part of a new month- (since TAC’s upgrade)- I can’t find out how to get (back) to the previous month’s lessons I haven’t “completed” yet- (my 5-6 days routine). So I have been either printing those out- (the ones from the end of “last month- that are no longer available)- and practicing off the printed sheets), or “favoritizing” and accessing them that way. Either way works.

To refer back to your issue- occasionally there is that one lesson that comes to me really easily- and I put my 10 mins in on that one maybe only 3-4 days. Kind-of throws the “progression” out of whack a bit- but no big deal.

You can “mark” a lesson complete any time you want to.

You can also simply go “back” to any this month’s lesson you haven’t yet completed just by clicking on it- (left-side column weekly schedule of lessons). That’s how I get- (back)- to the lessons that are still in my “rotation-mill” setup. You can also go back and get lessons you’ve already marked “complete”.

I guess I don’t really know what that “Please go back and complete….” means. I saw it and wondered what it was- but it doesn’t seem to affect how I TAC- so no biggee.

Maybe this rambling helped- there are much smarter folks in here.

I understand your situation of wanting to use the month’s list of daily lesons as a scorecard, tracking those that need more work. I don’t think I have personally encountered the “Go Back and Complete the Previous Lesson” in the context of the dailies. As far as I can remember, I saw it only in Fretboard Wizard. I wonder if this is a new wrinkle or just a “burp” in the system. I guess there are alternative ways for you to keep score, but that would be les convenient than what you were doing so I feel your pain. I hope it’s just a temporary shortcoming that resolves back to permitting you to do what you were doing.

I just very recently joined this community (day 10!). What attracted me to this program in Tony’s 40-minute-long-sales-pitch is taking off pressure from mastering something before moving on. I am someone who will not celebrate a “small win” until I get it perfect. And there is always that one transition I keep messing up, or the one chord that doesn’t sound perfect, so basically, I never give myself that pat on the back. The idea of giving it your best shot for at least 10 minutes, taking from it what you’ve learned, and leaving behind what was out of reach is very liberating and exciting for me. So perhaps this feature is meant to reinforce that original concept of consistency above mastery and learning by experiencing a new challenge every day.

I like Jumpin’ Jeff’s suggested workflow of using the menu to go back to previous challenges (or add to favorites if you wish to keep it beyond the month) but still allowing yourself to click on the “complete” if you spent 10 earnest minutes on it, whatever the result was.

Hmmm. Thanks for all your replies but it looks as if I haven’t explained very well.

In today’s case, I spent the 15 minutes I normally schedule on today’s challenge and then wanted to mark it complete. However, the system will not let me do this. The system is insisting that I go back to yesterday and complete that first. Since I didn’t manage to spend any time on yesterday’s I do not want to mark it complete – but that now means I can’t mark today’s complete either.

I’ll keep you posted but I suspect that, once I have spent my 15 minutes on tomorrow’s challenge, I will not be allowed to mark that one complete either because Tuesday’s will still not be marked complete.

I simply don’t want to mark Tuesday’s as complete until I have actually worked on it, which I would usually do when there are no challenges at the weekend.

This appears to be a new restriction. I was able to leave challenges incomplete last week without affecting subsequent challenges.

    On another point raised…

I have not tried using favourites in the new system. In the old system, marking an item as a favourite just inserted it in alphabetical order into my list of favourites. This meant that any concept of “going back to Tuesday’s” was lost. I had to remember the name of the challenge. Now, although I absolutely love Tony’s fanciful naming conventions, the resulting names do not lend themselves to systematic filing!

Also, I thought the idea of favourites was to keep challenges that are my favourites, rather than just challenges I didn’t get round to tackling during the month.

Once again, thanks for all the replies. We’ll get there!

I think you can work on any lesson from the present month any time you want to- because they are still in “the list” on the column on the left. Whether they are marked “complete” or not.

Example- go to today’s lesson (Wallflower).

Below the picture you see the warning you first mentioned- (the “Please go back…..” message-box).

But– then click on yesterday’s lesson- “High School Prom”– and it comes back up just fine- whether you’ve completed either one of them– or neither– or both…. Even if you have “completed” a lesson, you can still go back and get any “un-completed” lesson from the list no problem. You can also go back and click your “completed” lesson and it also will come back just fine.

I don’t think it necessarily matters to “the Program” what you’ve marked complete or not- maybe it’s just a way for you to keep track of it.

I believe you can mark the complete whenever you want to- in whatever “order” you want.

Please- group- set me straight if I have this all wrong!

I do wish they would keep the last-month’s lesson around for a week or two so I wouldn’t have to print ’em out or “favoritize” them- (just to access them)-, because the day the new-month’s lesson’s show up– last month’s are <b style=”font-style: italic;”>gone. (at least I can’t find ’em!).

Sorry if I just made everything just more confusing….
