Showing Off My Routine
1. My goal is to pick up my guitar for 15 minutes a day, five days a week…normally Monday through Friday. In reality I now pick it up to play daily, and usually for more than 15 minutes. Not long ago I traded in my Taylor GS Mini for a Taylor 214CE, which is a total joy to play.
2. I usually play at 8AM, always with a cup of coffee by my side. If I miss my morning time, then I play at around 4:30. And since I can’t drink caffeine that late in the day, I play with Bourbon 🙂
3. My favorite space to play in is our sunroom. We moved onto a lake about three years ago and converted the old garage into a wonderful sunroom that overlooks the lake. The view looks different every day, and the space inspires me.
4. Before joining TAC my guitar routine was a lot like my high school dating life…on and off, and most off. I would get inspired and play regularly for a short time, but without any sense of direction. I lost motivation when I didn’t sense any improvement in my playing, so I would stop until I got inspired again. TAC really has changed that. I’ve only been a member for about 8 months, but here are just three of the changes I’ve experienced:
– Steady and noticeable progress. My finger accuracy, confidence in hitting the right strings, finger coordination and hand strength and flexibility are significantly better than when I started. A couple of months ago one of our sons was visiting while I was practicing and he said, “Wow, you’ve really improved.” More motivation!
– Ability to play more challenging songs. Because of the progress I’ve experienced I’ve been able to tackle more challenging material. Lately I’ve been working on some old fingerstyle blues, as well as Clapton’s version of “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out”. I couldn’t have touched those songs a year ago. Now I’m confident that I can make steady progress in learning to play them.
– Finally, thanks to TAC’s focus on fun I find myself playing just for fun. It helps that every lesson that Tony teaches is half music and half comedy, but that really does carry over into an attitude of sheer enjoyment.
