  • First solo/30 days question.

    Posted by JILLC on January 28, 2026 at 9:24 am

    Hey there fellow pickers!

    Im about to finish up with the 30 days and am on the solo part. When you click on the last part where you play the solo Tony is still playing along and all I can hear is him playing, not making my own music. What am I missing here? I thought it would be just the back track and ME playing but Im really playing along with him which is distracting cause I cant make my own solo (and at my own pace cause Im slower than Tony) if I am hearing his. I only have the one button to click on back track so none there with just the back track only. Is this a known thing people ask or is it just me?

    Update: I had a thought just now after posting….. is Tony playing the back track? or is he still just playing along, sorry! It all sounds the same as when he was showing what to do.

    Good question. Tony is playing the backing track while you play around and “solo” freely while he plays. It is a little intimidating and it does seem faster than I’d be used to, but it does help me keep it simple. Instead of trying to be a guitar master, I will stick to just a few notes for the solo and it keeps me humble. Plus, I have more growth to look forward to the next time around. And to confirm, you aren’t playing the whole scale that he teaches (I guess you can…) but you are playing “random” notes within the scale to create your own solo. You can play just one note the entire time at different beats and you’d be just fine doing that too. It is yours to have fun with!

    Have fun!

    Thanks Matt for your input. I played along as best I could but it wasnt fun at all for me. I ended up marking it completed and moved along to the 5 day program. This one IS fun!!!

    @JILLC @MattTX_24

    I am currently learning from an excellent instructor and have seen it demonstrated you can literally “solo” over the backing track while playing the pentatonic scale note for note in sequence! It’s not about fancy riffs and note sequences, the secret lies in the rhythm you use while playing the scale and giving the notes your personal feel. The rhythm should match the song’s rhythm.

    This is before you add any fancy embellishments (pull offs, hammer ons or bends), it will sound amazing. You might add a bit of vibrato. This is why Tony has us playing the scale with the backing track. If done correctly it makes a beautiful solo by itself.

    Ive only been learning a month so those things you referenced I have no idea what you are talking about, yet. I mostly only learn from TAC, Its too confusing watching all the YT videos from everyone else on YT vids. But it sounds interesting none the less! Thanks again Pete!

    I am also on the first lesson of the First Solo. He mentions in the practice that he will do it in three different speeds, but for me only one speed is playing and then it restarts. How do I see the other speeds? I have tried manually changing the speed of the video, but that distorts the sound. Thanks all!

      On the bottom right hand corner of the videos of him playing, there is an “options” button that has different speeds.
