Wagon Wheel Chord Transition Insight for beginners
How to transition: this song starts each measure with a different chord (aside from 7 and 8). Beginners fingers aren’t up to speed yet in finding their positions, but we can get at least 1 finger in place and often times this is enough. Also we get a mulligan on half of the 8 chords because 2, 3 and 5 lead off with open string notes and 8 is a repeat of 7.
In my efforts to transition better l looked for ways begin forming the next chord at the end of each measure. Tony hints at this in the Learn video, but doesn’t elaborate which I am going to do here. Hopefully this is helpful for some people. And if my newbie thinking is out of line, please correct me!
For example: measure 1 as I’m going from G to D I can bring index and middle down to their D chord positions on the <b style=”background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>4And beat, and lift pinky while I hit the open D for measure 2.
Measure 3 is easy since the bass note is open D, in Measure 4 I slide the ring finger over to fret3 first, hit the bass as I being to place index and middle in their C chord positions. Measure 5 is very similar, get the bass note with the middle and place ring and index of the G chord, etc., etc.
Lastly and this is optional: I use a 3 finger G chord (index not needed) since we don’t play the A string at all according to the TAB.
One can practice each of the transitions slowly and individually, then gradually add more sequential measures and increase your transition speed.
I can’t play this song at full speed yet, but doing these gradual transitions is showing me the path to getting there!
