When I started I couldn’t even do simple boom chucka rhythm while singing simple lyrics. You just have to play the song so many millions of times that your hand can mindlessly go on auto pilot. You have to know the lyrics so well that you can hear the entire song in your head from start to finish while practicing. At first it seems impossible but once your brain builds the new connections it isn’t any harder than playing without singing. Eventually you forget it was ever “impossible”. We all look for the secret tip to cure all but the answer is just more time and practice even if that means you wont be good at it for months or longer

Thanks e’one!
The stage lights are so bright I cant see the audience sometimes

Thx. I like hearing I’m not the only one that likes the songs I pick because I know they aren’t exactly the cool new stuff the kids are listening to lol
I miss how the old version of this website had a view counter so you could at least tell if people were clicking on it even if they arent leaving comments. Sometimes when I post I feel like I am talking to myself because I cant tell if anyone is watching it or not

The most popular pic in the world is the Dunlap tortex .70 teardrop shape. If you’re not used to picks you might want to use something slightly lighter like a .60
Your two main choices for material will be nylon or tortex. Avoid all the weird specialty stuff for now
You will find that light picks are easier to strum but very difficult to pick out individual strings. Heavy gauge picks will be just the opposite- harder to strum but better for soloing
Pick material and gauge will change the tone of your guitar possibly even more than the type of wood or type of strings your using. It’s worth buying a couple variety packs.

Thx. That was the song of the day from the radio that I was obsessed with until the next earworm gets me. I was supposed to be working on some Doc Watson stuff

Forgot to mention this song is by the Marshall Tucker band

I’ve been on the site a couple years and I’ve never heard of it. Might be some thing old that they forgot to edit out as the site changed over the years

I bought an old 1940’s guitar made by Stella Harmony that I would love to fix up someday. As is the action is beyond unplayayble. Even back then it was a cheapo kids guitar so I dont expect much from it but about those wall hangers…. sometimes when they got the look they got the look! The thought of “man if that old guitar could tell where its been” pops in my head everytime I see anything with worn off finish. To anyone else they probably look like old beaters but to me its a clue to mystery of its amazing past travels

The tabs are usually upside down. Its supposed to look like if you are hunched over the guitar looking down at it. I found this quite annoying and took a while to get used to it when I was beginning because it doesn’t really make a lot of sense because it’s not how you think about it in your head.
Just pay attention to which of the two E strings is the capital E and which is the lowercase e. The capital E is of course the bass string and the lower case the thinner string. I find that quite often cord diagrams will be the opposite or even be going vertical

Blaze Foley said the song wasn’t really about anyone specific. He is a backwoods kind of guy who probably doesn’t trust any politician from either side. I just thought Reagan because a couple lines where he says “he’s a movie star if you stay up late“ and “ he’s a real cowboy with his make up on”. It’s just kind of a cynical political song sung by a guy who’s too cool to care.
I just thought that it had a cool rhythm tone. Sometimes I have to take a break from strumming so I work on fingerpicking a little bit. It seems to be a different type of arm cramp so you can just switch to the other style when your arm gets tired lol
I definitely didn’t play the song the real way exactly the pattern it was supposed to be. I just kind of threw my hand at it adjusting on the fly and freestyled some thing that I thought sounded cool

What is tension management? Is that a stretching routine you do as part of warm up?

I distinctly clearly remember saying on day one to the teacher that I wasn’t interested in learning music theory I just wanted to play some songs. I thought music theory was for people that wanted to compose music. I was simply happy with playing covers of existing songs. The older wiser me now knows that you do need to know some music theory, because it makes it so much easier to remember those existing songs. Lol. As it ends up a good guitarist only needs to know about 10% of overall music theory, only what relates to guitar and fretboard layout. That little bit of theory is so important because it helps you remember what chords are normally played together or what notes of a scale are most likely in the same solo, making it so much easier to remember the song because the song is no longer just random information to memorize but more of a template

The pictures I posted of my guitar are t showing either.

Doing this song is how I finally mastered the D minor chord

I don’t think Blaze Foley was everr that popular but he was the original artist of the song clay pigeons that John Prine popularized. I think he was shot and killed in the late 80s in a dispute over money.
