Why I'm Here

I am 68 years old and returning to the guitar after a LONG time away. I started playing in my teens (mid-60’s) on a classical guitar. Took some lessons and played a lot of folk music. Bought a real nice 12 string when I was about 23 and played a lot with some buddies but then life got in the way (job, kids – you all know the drill) and the guitar went into the closet for increasingly long periods. I’m retired now and I’ve been threatening to pick up the guitar again for a few years and when my son started to pursue his guitar playing more seriously he convinced me to get my act together. I’ve since picked up the 12 string (a vintage Yamaha FG-630) that I bought (new) in 1975. I had it professionally set-up a while back and it still sounds and plays beautifully. I’ve also bought a couple of electric guitars (my first) and I’m learning more about those. Both are Harley Bentons – one a HB VH-35 Vintage semi acoustic, the other an HB-ST-20 (Strat copy). Both nice instruments. I have some plans to do some upgrades on the Strat (tuning heads, pickups, nut), but really I’m just enjoying the (new) experience.

My Guitar Goal

What I'm Focused On Now

Over the next 90 days I expect to focus on knowing the fretboard much better.  I am also going to working on chords, particularly further up the fretboard and learning more chord progressions between the 3rd and 15th frets.  Chord transitions are on the agenda.  I’ll also continue to work on flat picking and finger picking exercises .

My Guitar Routine

This is How I TAC

I play pretty much every day.  I might start in the morning (after coffee, paper, workout and shower) with some warmups (some of Tony’s, scales, finger exercizes), do Tony’s daily lesson for a half hour or thereabouts, and then just noodle, or sometimes find a tab to mess around with.  All of this might change as golf season gets underway in a couple of weeks, but I’ll still play everyday.
