Why I'm Here

Have always loved music, started playing guitar when I was 12, never had any lessons, so pretty much self taught. I’ve been in and out between playing the guitar, life, marriage, kids, grand kids, you name it has happened to where there was never any time to play. Fourteen years ago I decided to add the mandolin and violin to my guitar playing, played the violin the most though, needed lots of practice with my bowing arm. Then 10 years ago I had a freaky accident at work and cut the tip off my middle left hand finger, not to the bone, but enough to cause every nerve ending to be at the surface of the finger tip even after it healed. I tried several times to play, but the pain would stop me, so I gave it all up.

My granddaughter’s interest in music got me to playing once again, she wanted me to start teaching her some easy songs and some finger picking, but I have found it very slow in my own progress, not to mention everything I once knew is now forgotten, oh, forgot to mention, no more pain in that finger tip, it was the first one to get a callus on.

So here I am, starting over once again.

I have a new electric guitar, a classical and my old acoustic, Gibson (electric), Yamaha (classical) and a Gibson (old faithful). Classical is new to me, not used to the wider neck yet, sometimes I think my fingers are too short for it, lol, but they’re not, it’s the finger placement that feels a little different. I got the classical because not only did it feel easier to fret, but there are a few songs I have been learning that sound better with the classical guitar.

I seem to be in a rut, so I decided this course may be the answer to that little push of getting me to practice everyday. Being self taught a person misses out on a lot of things, sure, you develop your own style of playing, but there is a void, something missing, some other technique to bring about the lost motivation you once had in the past. Have to get out of that rut, so here I am! I'm not planning on playing in a band again, but you never know when someone wants you to play a song, or two for them, and I want to be able to just pick up my guitar and make it sound easy and effortless.
