My Guitar Goal

What I'm Focused On Now

I actually have two goals, both related. I need to improve chord transitions on the dozen or so open chords I know, and I am working on barre chords.

1) Be able to transition between any two of the open chords in my repertoire smoothly

2) Be able to solidly fret and play E, A, Em, Am shaped barre chords

My Guitar Routine

This is How I TAC

I’ve finally established a routine that works for me.

Every day, 7 days a week I do finger exercises and scales in the morning while waiting for the coffee to brew. This is a minimum of 15 minutes but often stretches into 30-45 minutes. This happens every morning in the living room

Most weekdays I practice again in the afternoon when I get off of work. What I work on at this time is more fluid. Sometimes it’s just chord transitions, sometimes it’s a song. It’s whatever is going to help me with my goals. I practice here either in the office/music room which is rapidly turning into a music studio or out on the back deck. I love playing on the back deck. I live right on the edge of a small town and I feed some semi-feral cats that have taken up residence here, along with the squirrels and birds. When I’m out on the deck I have the animals for company. Cats, birds, the goldfish pond, the occasional possum or raccoon. It’s kind of a zoo out there and I love it.

Weekends are a whole different story. I’m involved in a lot of projects around the house, so sometimes I don’t have much time for more than my morning routine. Other weekends, I’m not busy and I end up picking up the guitar over and over. I’ll hear something in a song and go look it up and try to play it, or I’ll have an idea about something I’ve been working on and go test it out. I love those weekends.

Why I'm Here

Many years ago, in high school, I was in the band. I loved it, and I was good at it. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I had to walk away from music. I’ve always regretted not keeping music more alive and spent the rest of my life unwinding at the end of a long workday singing along to my favorite music. I bought a guitar in 2013 with the intent to learn it and be able to accompany my own voice. It didn’t work well. I’m right-handed, but with some serious damage to my left wrist. Specifically, in the joints where my thumb and index finger meet in my wrist. I learned some basic open chords and was doing well. Once I began to reach for barre chords I ran into problems. The pressure in the area while holding a barre chord was beyond painful. I started and stopped playing multiple times in the past 7 years, never really achieving any competency.

I work in a Hospital. When COVID hit, my stress levels peaked and I was stuck with a LOT of off time at home. I figured this was it. I was 59 (now 60) and it’s “do or die time”. I pulled out my guitar again and almost immediately that old frustrations came out.

One day a good friend suggested I could “just flip it over and play it the other way”. I laughed at first, but it got me to thinking. 2 months later I bought a left-hand guitar. A few months later I joined TAC. I’ve made more progress between December 2020 and April 2021 than I made in the previous 7 years.

I’m hooked, bordering on obsessed. As I write this my guitar is in the shop getting its first ‘setup’ and I’m having separation anxiety. I’ve never felt this good about the guitar and I enjoy every single day of it.
