My Guitar Goal

What I'm Focused On Now

For the next 90 days I have 4 goals that are achievable and will give me a stretch:

1. Establish a solid practice routine.

2. Learn all the notes of the fretboard

3. Learn “Imagine” – finger picking and lyrics, together!, off-book.

4. Attend 2 open mics. (playing will come next time)

5. Pick and participate in a forum.

My Guitar Routine

This is How I TAC

30 minutes x 5 days a week.

I’m not yet sure what time of day will work best, so I’ll be experimenting with that. I think I’ll start with right after lunch.

In my den. That’s where my instruments are, so I’ll scrounge up a laptop to set up in there and make sure it connects to my printer.

I like the idea of having a practice journal, so I’ll go with that too.

Like Sharon, I do better with structure, so I’ll try to break it down so that I hit all the important items each day:

5 min stretch/ 5 min warm-up and scales/ 5 min fretboard knowledge

5 min daily challenge / 5 min review previous challenges / 5 min on song.

After writing this down it seems a bit obsessive, but I know from experience that if it doesn’t add up on paper, it will not be achievable. I’m sure this will morph over time. It’ll be interesting to see what I end up with.

Why I'm Here

I got my first guitar for Christmas when I was 12. At the time I was learning the violin, but my baby brother used to cry when I practised – that was discouraging. I guess my parents felt the same way.

Over the years I have been mostly strumming and picking chords to accompany songs – campfire, youth group, church etc. I’m pretty darn good at the basics but I am stuck in a long long rut.

Now that I’m retired I have the time to focus on the things that I love. Yay! I’m ready to progress. I’d like to add embellishments to my chords; I’d like to understand basic chord theory; I’d like to learn to solo; I like to write some songs with more interesting chords. And most of all, I’d like to be able to play without charts in front of me.
