Why I'm Here

Started playing when I was about 8, but haven’t played until recently for about 30 years or more (55 now), and only played off an on prior to stopping. Mostly classical so I’m not the worst at finger-picking but I probably am in the top 10 worst at flat-picking.  Trying to force myself to get used to using a thumb pick, which feels really awkward but not playing without it for now.

I have an old Yamaha classical, no idea what model, that one is with one of my stepdaughters at IU right now; a Takamine GC3CE-Blk classical; Taylor 214 nylon; a Seagull Walnut Isyst steel-string acoustic which is pretty low-end in the Seagull line but extremely playable (my knock-around for when my grandsons are in the vicinity) and finally got my Taylor 814ce out of layaway last night (06-30-2016) AND got to watch Doyle Dyke’s play at the same time!

I had a Gretsch Electromatic 5620 and a Fender American Elite Strat, but traded them off to get the 814 out of music prison sooner.  All these guitars are ones I’ve amassed during the last few months since I decided to really play again. I would like to get another hollow body electric, maybe a Gretsch or a Godin; love Chet Atkins style playing and Doyle Dyke’s performance was nothing less than inspiring, AWE-inspiring.

As far as my musical tastes, mentioned Atkins and Doyle Dyke’s, some bluegrass, classical, folk in general, some blues and LOVE Celtic music arranged for guitar, a la Tony Mcmanus, Stephen Wake and several others. Too many players to mention.

One stepdaughter w/husband living with us (they’re all Chinese and it’s a kind of normal keep-the-family-all-together thing) with my 2 year old and 3  and 1/2 year old grandsons. Love having the grandsons around though it can make practicing challenging at times since the oldest is also my shadow.

City

I think my hobbies just narrowed as I got older, stopped playing golf, originally because when I remarried (about 10 years ago) we were a little cash-strapped and golf is very expensive. Suddenly I realized I didn't have any hobbies left and remembered how much I'd always wanted to master the guitar, so it was now or never.
