Hi @KevinAppel , I will attempt to answer your question “How does it all fit together?” as succinctly as I can. When I started I was laying on the ground with my nose touching it and I could see that which was in front of me and a lot more in my peripheral vision but it was not as easy to see. As I began doing the lessons, day in and day out, I started to gain elevation and my vision/knowledge (the clarity of musical guitar real estate) increased in area. I spent a good deal of time trying to force my perspective to try and see over the horizon as it were but to no avail. After a prolonged period of trying to intellectualize and anticipate to no avail, I decided to trust the process be in the moment with the lessons. I reveled in the process of each lesson, enjoying the process (I paid Tony to teach me so I decided to let him instead of trying to teach myself). The process provided the elevation to which I could then see more. This allowed me to gain perspective and understanding of what was going on faster without the frustration I had previously experienced. My theory knowledge increased as my physical capabilities developed: two distinct things developing in tandem. It was as if everything blurry became clear but then I would begin to notice details that had not been remotely apparent before. This process continues to this day. Surprising details continue to fill in the picture. No lesson is ever old as I have learned so much since the last time I played it. I am 6ish years into the process. At a certain point you see that the whole thing is a big loop. Music is big loop. There is only one scale with infinite variations depending how small the detail is you are willing to see. I realized there was a whole music world right where I started with my nose on the ground…I just didn’t know what I was seeing there.
Sorry, longer than I wanted but that is my summary in answer to your question. Maybe the shortest answer: It fits together in time but you have to stick to it. Every day, do it! Observe your progress! It will reveal itself. The quality and focus of your effort will be the speed of your enlightenment. I guess I could have led with that 😊

@MikeGaurnier ; super fun to see those things that used to be mindblowingly challenging falling into place within the course of a ten minute playing session. 3 years made good right there. I also love how you conquered that old self limiting belief by continuing on as “usual” (good practice being reinforced by successful outcomes over time) and found that your initial assessment “seemed like it was to much for me” was not quite accurate. Instead your practiced adherence to what you knew had worked for you before, freeing you to dive in and meet the challenge. Kudos MG. You know this I am sure but I will write it anyway for my own benefit, last weeks Gauntlet Excercise will make that pinky stretch all the easier, dare I say, at will? Yes I am saying it. Throw that in for 10 minutes twice a day for two weeks and tell me it is not at will. Double Dog Dare You.

Hi @Cadgirl : one of the best thin picks I found for strumming was the Jim Dunlop .60mm Nylon. Takes some of the pick to string sound out but still provides flex. Best of all they are inexpensive.

I found them to be like Lions and Tigers: sure they are both cats but lotta differences too. I only play acoustic and I feel like a fish out of water when I pick up an Electric. String scale, string tension and the whole feel of the instrument is sooo different for me. Let us know how you fare. I am always curious about others experiences.

just make sure the assortment pack has “Nylon” in it. Dunlop makes Derlin and Tortex and Ultex but the Nylon has the most give with the least noise when it gets down in the thinner thicknesses (weird phrase). There is enough stiffness where I feel I don’t loose any accuracy with the trade off being softer sound meaning it takes more effort to create volume.

aside, my ignominious confession: every blue moon or so I indulge in the old fish finger sammy. Hmmm fishfingers may be in the same dictionary as hoppalopters and strawbabies.
I feel like I might be pressing my luck straying so far from the path of focus. No Whammy, No Whammy. It is @Fletch ‘s fault.
In my defense the Hoppalopter song is one of Maggies called Baby Brother and it is hands down my favorite children’s song.

The canines are already in, how much shaking will occur remains to be seen. In today’s world sometimes having the wound is better than inflicting the wound. Turn the other cheek and all. Not to be confused with cheeky. Still is feeling like a bit of a mouse trap in the most disassociated way. Life and death are real but not in a simulation. Still feels like Schwaub is playing a big Xbox game and I am trying hard to avoid being linked into it where I am moved around by him. Gotta be a song in there somewhere. Hiding in electronic shadows.

When you put it that way I see what you mean @Fletch . I love those atonal chromatic tones that play over and over, almost monastic, if you will. And in the end…who’s tone disappears? Maybe both tones disappear and simultaneously neither tone disappears, the tones are reborn as a single unified sound each indistinguishable from the other in perfect harmony. Kinda like how it was when we played Mother together. Thinking back, that probably is not a good comparison as it was more of an exercise in perfect imperfection. Still made me cry when I heard the finished result. Tears of joy my friend in case you were thinking otherwise. Mother do you think they’ll drop the bomb?

So so right Loraine. I have been able to do it for a while in fits and starts but being able to do it at will, with different volumes, and for 10 focused minutes is new and exciting.

Just when I think it can’t possibly get any better, it does. This is such a useful learning method.

If you pressed me to say…I would say generally yes but specifically no. Because they react so differently to attack and fingering I can only say generally they will carry over. The things absolutely the same are learning the fretboard…where the notes are located, getting familiar with chords etc. and ear training.
