My Guitar Goal

What I'm Focused On Now

I originally set out to do an Open Mic (and I still hope to do so) but I think I needed to backtrack and make my goal “to create a setlist” of 3-5 songs that I can play anytime, anywhere, without any visual prompts. Once I have that down, selecting a song for Open Mic will become easier. I have a tendency to get “somewhat good” at a song before chasing down the next one–I need to work on making some music I love performance ready.

My Guitar Routine

This is How I TAC

I generally commit to playing six days a week. (I figure even God rested on the seventh day…ha! But seriously, even if I end up picking up the guitar on Sunday, it is a win for me).

I have an office that is my “guitar den.” I have an amp, a mic, and a recording interface that I am just learning how to use. My guitars are on a Swing String so I can grab whatever suits me at the moment. No question about where to practice–I even have a playing area set up with a music stand.

Generally, I play in the mornings, after we walk the dog on some off-leash trails. I do my daily guitar stretches while walking. When I return to my office/guitar den I pull up the TAC lesson for the day and begin playing. Occasionally, if there are errands to run or work to do, I end up postponing until the early afternoon, and very rarely put it off until after dinner. It doesn’t seem to be an issue for me to wait until later in the day to play if needed–the habit is strong and seeing my guitars displayed on my office wall is a big visual cue to get into it!

Why I'm Here

I played a little guitar in high school and college but never advanced much beyond open chords and a little easy fingerpicking. After a long hiatus, I made it a priority for retirement to play more music. I started piano lessons up about four years ago (preretirement) and in May of 2020 I joined TAC and began to play everyday. What a difference a daily habit makes! Although I am not ready to play out on my own, I can clearly see my progress. I am currently the owner of my high school guitar (Crestwood/Epiphone 70s), a vintage Madeira (Guild) 12 string, a Seagull S6 slim cutaway, a Taylor 814ce dlx, a Breedlove Oregon Concertina in Myrtlewood, and a mahogany Guild M25e. I reside in Auburn Hills, MI as well as part-time in beautiful Traverse City, MI. I am a woman of the lakes as well as a guitar geek!
