I’m replying to my own post as I found something interesting. On my post, I said Tony talked about learning others songs using the 5 step TAC method and I was wondering how to actually go about that even though I’ve been using TAC for several years. Well he described it on an old Acoustic Tuesday episode. I been going through some of the old episodes, I’ve always enjoyed them, wish he would start them up or something similar again. Here’s the episode, he works on an approach to learning a Bill Brunny son using his 5 step method.

Please help! I rely want to complete these older lessons, how do I get back to April and March?

I really don’t agree with the learning by ear thing; although I wish I could do it. I think my best approach to learning is knowing the theory that goes along with it, then a piece of music makes sense. I play bass in a for fun rock band. Three of us, guitar, drums and me on bass. The guitar player is a good player but plays by ear, he’s the leader of the band so picks the songs. He can never tell me the key or progression of the song, yet I need to know in order to play bass. I generally watch and follow him. If he knew a little theory and understood the Nashville Number system, it would make my life easier. I find it very frustrating trying to learn a song by ear, but that’s just me.

Hey, it. Looks like Tony is doing a revisit to Mississippi John Hurt the end of this month! Really looking forward to it!

Try this, big John Hurt song

Thanks Mike! Big help! I downloaded the tab, too bad the archive video got lost; maybe Tony can repost. I did find it to be quite a challenge, and I’ve been playing for 10 years, but not blues or finger style. I’m very uncoordinated in finger style; I’m left handed playing right handed. I really love the Delta blues sound. If you have access to John Oates “Arkansas” take a listen, he’s got it down Pat plus the newer recording is easier to pick out what he’s doing.

Just for technique?I agree, TAC is great to get you playing everyday, great teaching techniques for sure. But it’s like in the Karate Kid, “Wax On, Wax Off” teaching techniques, but not how to apply them. It would be nice if a song was added to show where the techniques are used. I realize copy rights might be costly but by using old standards, like American Roots Standards, that are not copy written anymore would be useful. The week he did on Mississippi John Hurt was my favorite because he related it to actual songs.

I don’t remember when it was, perhaps one one saved it and can share the link. I would love to do a repeat on Mississippi John Hurt. Hoping Tony will do a “In theStyle of JimmieRodgers” and we can learn the runs, licks and yodels.
