Why I'm Here

I started playing 20 years ago. I learned from a book called “The Complete Guitar Player”. I bought numerous books after that. I took a few music classes at Sacramento City Community College. That lasted about a year and a half and was the best period of playing since until TAC. After that, I was very inconsistent, but I just refused to give up on playing guitar. I have been playing about 8 months this go round and have been part of TAC for 12 days. I have more motivation than I have ever had. I am better than I was during any of my periods of playing. I love being a part of TAC.

I have owned a total of 7 guitars. The first one was a very cheap nylon string beginner guitar that was given to me. It is the only one I do not regret losing. The second one was an entry-level blue Ovation with feather decorations around the sound holes. I sold it after I damaged it even though the damage had been repaired.  Then I bought a flat black dreadnought with a cutout but no electronics. It was a beautiful sounding, hand-made guitar that was worth way more than I paid for it. That may be the one I regret giving up the most. Then I bought a gently used, blonde, Epiphone Casino. The one guitar I still own came next and has been with me over ten years. It is my favorite of all the guitars I have had. Then I received a custom made, Telecaster shaped electric. About the same time I bought a used, Strat-shaped, beginner bass that I still own though I’ve never learned to play it. I am looking to buy a couple more guitars.

Music is a gift from God and I wish to cultivate that gift to the glory of God and the pleasure of those around me. Standing still is an illusion. We are moving forward or backward, growing or decaying. To keep this gift of music so I can continue to share it, I must always strive  to improve.

My Guitar Goal

What I'm Focused On Now

I want to get the easy finger picking song “I’ll Fly Away” under my fingers by the first Wednesday in April for the LIVE 90-Day Guitar Progress workshop. This is March 25th. I also want to keep playing the easy version of “Freight Train” so I can improve how smoothly I play it.

My Guitar Routine

This is How I TAC

I play 7 days a week. I play in our office upstairs usually. Sometimes when my wife isn’t feeling well, I will play downstairs in the dining room. I have a regular stretching routine that I try to do  every day.

When I pick up my guitar, I start with a warm up. I first warm up my fretting hand using the standard “spider walk”, then I warm up my picking hand doing the string locator warm up. Sometimes, I warm up with a pick on top of the other 2 warm ups.

If I have the lesson available to me, I listen to that then work on getting it smooth. If possible, I play along with the video. When it goes well, I will increase the tempo.

I always work on finger picking songs I am trying to drum into my muscle memory. I do this 2 or more times a day.
