Why I'm Here

I always wanted to play guitar when I was a kid. Four years ago a friend and I decided to embark on learning the guitar together and we both took private lessons–separately because no one would teach us together. At first we had different teachers, eventually we had the same instructor at separate lessons.  This instructor never plays with you and doesn’t teach any songs until you get through the “basics” he requires and that has taken me 2 years. And that was after 2 years with other instructors.

Anyway, neither of us ever dreamed guitar would as “challenging” as it has been to get to a level of proficiency. We love it, but there is so much we want to learn, and 1 lesson a week makes the progress seem slow even though we are both diligent about practicing and meet every week to play together.

My first guitar was a Bedel Discovery series (they don’t make these anymore) that I bought at Guitar Center when I knew nothing at all about guitars. It’s a good quality guitar, but even after a setup to lower the action, it was still a difficult touch for me. Last year I got a Martin 0015, and it has been so much easier on my fingers and it’s got a gorgeous sound. Getting a great guitar has made a huge difference for me.

I’m in this forever, and want to learn as much as I can, and have a solid repertoire of songs to play. I’m also working on singing, which is another challenge, but in time I’m hoping everything comes together, and I’m hoping this course fills in some of the gaps.

I feel like music was the missing piece in my life. I've immersed myself in learning and listening and rediscovering. It's like an awakening for me, and being the best guitar player I can be is something I love working at–finally, I found something I really love doing.
