The finger stretchability will grow with time, for now just do your best, move your hand if necessary or slap a capo on the guitar and move the exercise up the neck!

There are a few challenges, once you progress to those, that will require some crazy stretches and we all struggle with those, do our best and mark complete. Most challenges are not that way so not to worry. Keep the 80 – 20 rule in mind!

It’s a tough one and I am certainly not all the way there yet, but when I think of where I came from, it is soooo much better. I am on my 5th run through Old Man, and I really turned the corner with the F mini very recently (within the last 5 months) and it’s getting better and better. I also put lighter strings on my guitar and that seems to have helped as well.

Great discussion! On Jan 3rd I will be 18 months into TAC and about 22 months since starting from ZERO on my electric guitar. By Tony’s definition I know I’m a player, but I still don’t truly play songs and sing along to them. I don’t consider myself could enough to perform as I’m very mistake prone and I have to take several runs at the daily challenges before I can do a decent take. There are still a number of them that I absolutely suck at. On the other hand I have come a very long way from ZERO and I still feel progress regularly.

I think the biggest obstacle right now is my fretting (left) hand is slow. I want to play Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd which I selected because it’s only 3 chords, but I can’t make the changes fast enough! Especially C to G.

I am doing 3 finger (folk) G; so I only have to move the middle and ring fingers up one string each but my pinky tends to get stuck (or blocked by the ring finger) and not make it down to the high E string. Then I remember that when I started TAC I couldn’t do this 3 finger G to save my life, the pinky was bending funny and kind of spasming. Now I can not only do it easily but I can hold it for hours so it helps to look back at where you came from. Why am I beating myself up for not getting there quickly enough?

Similarly when transitioning from the G to A minor, the index finger is lagging in finding the B string. Someone said 1000 changes: I’m sure that I rehearsed these transitions more than a 1000 times because I’ll do it at least 10 times every day that I attempt it (which is pretty near to every day) and I’ve been at it for well over 100 days. Probably closer to 200.

I have got to remember that while I won’t be an expert player next year, this doesn’t mean that I am not getting better with each session and I am absolutely a guitar player!

@mojim60gmail-com the short answer is: TAC is a program that teaches all aspects of guitar playing. The focus isn’t on playing certain songs, rather the goal is to develop your skills to the point that learning hundreds of songs will be at your fingertips. Tony addresses this very question very frequently in the daily challenges. He doesn’t give you the exact recipe for a given song. Instead he shows you how to prepare the ingredients, recommends all the best cooking tools and how can tweak the recipe according to your taste or your audience’s.

This is a very common question that gets asked 2 or 3 times a month. Here is one of the latest threads on the topic:

    Hello and welcome @alice-schulte-ipny !

When you say it’s taking you a week for each part, are you talking about a video or a group of videos? Only asking because if you are spending a week on a single video lesson then I have to wonder why? Is it because you are only playing once a week, or are you returning to the same lesson day after day?

You really just want to try to do your best on each one and then just move on. It is not necessary to absolutely nail each section, you will be fine to proceed. Perfection is your enemy here in the TAC program, so I just want to make sure you aren’t trying to be perfect before progressing. If this is not the case then carry on as you were!

    Welcome @suet93msn-com ,

That’s wonderful! I hope to be playing with the worship team at my church within the next couple of years. There’s hope, I know the Music Pastor, he might even teach me a few things. Keep on praising Him! He is worthy!

I don’t suffer from arthritis but know their are several here that can chime in.

Have you seen the warmup routine in the skills courses? I’ll post that below. But there are also ways to play chords with only 1 or 2 fingers while only striking 3 strings, you might consider this approach. Of course there are many TAC challenges that are built around the ten or so open chords that beginners typically learn first (C, D, D-, E, E-, E7, G, A, A-, A7) so use your discretion about which open chord shapes you might want to put on the back burner for now if you want to try out this alternative.

    @the-old-coach I have 2 questions
    1. Was the lifetime was not available during your first year, or even the second?

    2. Do you still have access to the forum without a membership? I guess you do, I just tried on a different browser where I’m not logged in and it works! So I guess I really only have the one question. lol!

@the-old-coach when I joined I did the yearly plan and lifetime was offered at sign up. After a few weeks I wrote to support saying that I would now choose lifetime but how could I sign up for lifetime without trying it first? I was told I could upgrade anytime before the year ends and they would apply 100% of my yearly fee to lifetime. I did this later on and they refunded me everything as promised after I paid for lifetime. Now they have discontinued it, which I think is a big mistake, but I don’t run this show.

@Loraine are you able to play with less pain now or is the wrist (or any other parts of your arm or hand) still giving you a lot of trouble? Has it been getting better since your most recent surgery? Sorry if you already posted a report recently and I missed it.
