Why I'm Here

I’m currently 68 years old.  My first guitar was an old Hohner that I got as a Christmas present in 1992.  It was a complete surprise as I never talked about wanting to learn to play.  I didn’t know what to do to learn.  At the time, lessons were too expensive.  I bought some Mel Bay books; however, that didn’t work too well.  I bought several CD “learn to play” courses, but that didn’t work well either.  I finally started taking lessons.  I did that for about 6 months; however, the instructor was old and he only used old 1930s show tunes for his lessons.  While I’ve got nothing against 1930s show tunes, it wasn’t very motivating.  I then moved my office, so it was no longer convenient to continue.  I did not play for a number of years, and then I started with some other online instructors.  About 2000 I was asked to sing in our church choir.  The 9:30 AM service had a guitar group with singers.  One of the guitar players was a friend, and he knew I had a guitar, so he asked me to come to his house and play, as he had a monthly jam session.  I did and I was hooked.  Back to the online lessons.  I stumbled on Tony while surfing the web and he’s made a great difference in my playing and my motivation to play.  Thank you, Tony and the TAC crew.

I had discontinued TAC as I had several online lessons going at the same time and I didn’t have the time to continue all of them.  After a while I realized that TAC was superior to what I had been doing and I have rejoined.

City

Getting better is important to me because I want to keep my mind active.  I also simply love playing the guitar.  I love the sound of an acoustic guitar.  When I perfect a lick or learn a song (that actually sounds like it should) I get such a wonderful feeling inside.  It's a natural high.  I want to play for my grandchildren.  They're mostly small now, but some of them are intrigued when I play and my greatest dream is to motivate one (or more) of them to learn to play.  If I could get good enough to inspire one of them to learn, that would make me the happiest guy on earth.

My Guitar Goal

What I'm Focused On Now

I have been working on fingerpicking and my goal for the next 3 months is to become more proficient and be able to play at least 5 James Taylor songs.

My Guitar Routine

This is How I TAC

I play a little everyday. I have a dedicated music room, although my wife calls it the guest bedroom. I play at 2 PM. Monday through Friday I begin with the TAC challenge of the day. I then have set practice routines that differ slightly from day to day that includes various skills and drills. I play from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on my mood and how long my arthritic hands hold out. On weekends I play whatever I want. My main goal is to have fun.
