Thx for posting, that one’s in your wheelhouse! To sing Joni, and bring the lyrics around to poignancy of her old man leaving by the screen door….well, bravo. I’m a fan of Neil’s, who also has open tuning, and of course Stones are pure Open G…but other than the barre chords, I don’t know other chords (yet) once I’m in open tuning. Jes wondering, your process in learning the chords to the song….even using the E shape…

Looks like a tune you’ve always wanted to play! And 2 mics….as well as a voice amp somewhere…has there been discussions on TAC about best mics for those who just play at home?

You prob know this tune was recorded in late 1920s by Gus Cannon. When I read folkie Patrick Sky’s NYTimes obit on Sunday, it referenced what was then the folk boom—imagine that in 1964, Broadside newsletter in G’wich Village started “singing newspapers” events and performers would come by and sing topical songs, often written for the occasion. Pete Seeger was MC of Singing Newspaper Village Gate premiere in 1964, and 500 people showed up! Sky, Jack Elliot, Phil Ochs, Paxton, Buffy, Jack Elliott performed….

An acoustic is a different instrument, especially the way Tony goes about teaching….but it depends on what you’re playing and what’s fun to you. In the 12 Bar Blues Challenge Skill, Tony does show a Jimi Hendrix chord, but man, it loses something in the translation to acoustic. As Alfred suggests, there are other sites, some free, that are excellent, which I too would share.

Hi Lorraine, I thought most people want to play songs and not just the Daily Challenge stuff on its own….so I’m puzzled there’s no reference anywhere on TAC to incorporating the licks, the improvs, the chords, within Songs. And apparently lots of subscribers valued the now-gone Song Vault. I digress. When you say “first go on site” are you referring to some icon in top left that will show lists of names of available songs?

  • Thx, Dave, for those of us who came in after the mid-April changes and not on a lifetime basis, your institutional memory is valued.

Yes, my use of the term double dip is a pejorative. If I wanted to repeat Banjo Skills challenge, I can do so at any time, so I have a different take than you on benefits of repeating the Banjo Skills course during a Daily week. If anything, the Skills challenge courses posted are too brief, there should be further amplifications of each subject, as I had suggested.

I know of at least one online guitar instruction site that updated format, but also produced plenty of new content videos too. I knew something was up about the TAC choice of “evergreen formatting” of daily lessons during the recent “Making Grains” week. The guitar lick lesson that week was “Tribute to Mr. Rice” and in the video recorded years ago, Tony P. gushed that his guitar hero is Tony Rice, and he was paying tribute to Rice’s great flatpicking skills. Given Tony P’s tribute, and Rice’s renown in the acoustic guitar world, you’d think the administrators at TAC would have added an R.I.P. somewhere–either in the text below the video that day, or even an add to the video–noting that Tony Rice had passed away last December 25, at age 69.

  • Yes, Jeff, I’m aware that this our community space, and i made an offhand comment about where are the administrators to help. About 12 days ago, I had sent directly to Levi another question I had, and it ended up in the huge Forum section ‘Website Known Issues and FAQ” and I’m still awaiting a response from Levi. I notice many members are frustrated by the lack of administrative response.

  • I appreciate your thought about a potential bonus of having comments. it’s possible they did the same thing with another Skills course in Daily Challenge for last week of April. A question like mine would usually be answered by an Administrator, who could explain, and I don’t think I’ll get that courtesy….to me, if TAC plans to double dip Daily Challenges with existing Skills challenges, then, to add real value to a separate ‘Skills” section, TAC would develop each current 5 day challenge so that more content was added, i.e., a level one 5 day for beginners, followed by an intermediate 5 day, and an advanced 5-day….

Thx again, Loraine. I have just read through a Forum thread about the recent FAQ and all the tumult caused by changes to the site. Administrator Levi posted on Apr. 21 that 10 Skills 5 day challenge courses had just been added, presumably all at once. I’ll guess they’re packaged Daily Challenges, and I’ll have to ask Levi directly if adding 10 at once that means Skills will remain static for many months to come….

If you’ve been active with Daily Challenges since you joined, approx how many Daily Challenge lessons would you estimate Tony has filmed….at what point do they repeat (unfortunately, there’s no general info on the site about stuff like this).

I found that browsers matter with the site. On Firefox, the Daily Challenges were out of sync between audio and video, and basically screwed up. On Chrome, everything works fine.

thx Loraine. I’m new, so I’m not aware of timeline of when the site was updated. I assume site always had Tony’s lessons and community functionality, not sure what the updates were. However, if you could describe for me, and also go into your memory bank and pinpoint approx date for that update, could be a measure of when/if Skills will be added. Also, would you know who to ask at TAC about plans to update the Sessions?

I could see how the 5 day Challenges were added almost at once.
