  • Ridiculously fast strumming pattern

Posted by Alfred on March 29, 2021 at 5:13 pm

I don’t think anyone but me can unstuck me on this one.

I am trying to learn the rhythm for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” by deep blue something… Thank goodness the chord progression is really easy except for A/C# (and I will probably ignore that C# since the deal is Dani learns the lead, and she will be playing that note)

But the song is carried by the ridiculously fast almost aggressive strumming pattern. it has been kind of like driving blind, everything is going well right before I smash into a tree and try again. I will get it eventually, hopefully before I get tennis elbow 😛

Anyway, thought I would share just in case maybe someone has some words of wisdom that may have already learned this song, or is better at fast strumming than me

Oh man oh man do I remember being right here. I wanted to learn a great Robert Earl Keen tune that I heard my buddy Tony S. play. It took me forever to get not only the pattern down then it was getting it to speed and then trying to add the vocals which meant slowing it waaaaayyyyy down again. The good news Alfred is I got it and in the process my skills got better and I loved the song so playing it 1000 times was not a problem for me. My wife and my dogs have different opinions on the subject. Take a period of time you can invest in the learning and set the timer and play it every day. You will get it. There will be times that it feels like you are watching paint dry, that means the breakthrough is coming. If you get stuck leave it for a while and work on other stuff and come back to it. You will be amazed.

      Thanks Jeff,

I am brutal with myself. Someone mentioned a timer in another thread so that you could see that your time was almost up… Kinda like waiting for the end of school.

I think I might use that to apply the 10 minute rule to make myself stop instead.
My shoulder and elbow have had enough for today!

      Thanks for the advice!

Always did love reading comments from you @jumpinjeff . Now, I actually have to say something meaningless to let you know I like it because we don’t have the emoji reactions that every other social anything has, even Zoom. The other side of the coin is, I’m really good at saying meaningless things.

      MG 😀

Now why exactly did I find meaning in that post?😂

Likewise @Mike-Gaurnier , I prefer reading what you have to say rather than interpreting your emoji😉

Complements are never meaningless! Most folks love to get them and I love to read them wherever they are directed.

        Keep up the good work.

@Alfred , I feel your pain. I am learning the intro to Heart’s Crazy on you, which is much faster than I can currently play. Your comment about driving blind made me think of the ZZ Top’s song Arrested for Driving while Blind. (Perhaps a hint for me to learn it?) Anyway, I don’t have much more to add that except patience, practice, and (according to Tommy Emanuel) a place to play away from people 🙂 might help. Good luck and please share with us when you have it under your fingers.

Yep, and since I am not currently burdened by having to learn the lead, this great song ate me alive. I did get the speed, not the pattern, then slowed and got the pattern (kind of) but not at speed (I still haven’t the courage to post or play it live, but I hear and see the effort, and it makes me smile happy thoughts). @Alfred, you will get it, and wow what a great #famjam song when you and your daughter both hit it right on stride.

That is 3 solid minutes (or so) of 16th notes with little brake, @AttyTJ ! Color me impressed. This is one of the songs that was on a special CD that was put on for Dani’s nap time when she was a baby, so I will definitely work on it till I get it (rubs sore shoulder).

This is one I come back to periodically, and will eventually have enough so I am comfortable, but you have a greater incentive, @Alfred , and what a cool connection. Looking forward to when you two get it down and can share it. Great Song.

It is definitely one of those song where I thought… I can do that no problem! um yeah, 20 years ago I could do it… It takes some work these days.
