1.) How many days per week do you play?

My goal is to hit 6/7 days a week for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or two. I usually get in at least an hour or more. 10 minutes doesn’t hack it. It takes me 10 minutes just to get my fingers loosened up! As long as I am home, this has been achievable so far (the Pandemic actually helped a lot with that).

2.) What time of day do you play?

I try to target late in the morning, focusing on the TAC exercises, both current and past. I hit it again around 17:00 and use that time for complete and exercises that didn’t go well, and then I have some fun with trying songs or challenging parts of songs. Seems like every song has that one or two sections that are above my ability level, and so the focus is there. I view weekends as “My Time” and try to have some fun by getting at some song or two.

    3.) Where do you play?

I have my Guitar Zone set up in the basement. I can get at whatever I want and am not disturbing my wife or the neighbors for that matter. It is a ‘safe room’ where I can sound as bad or as good as my ability permits with no concerns.

3.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible, name 3 ways).

I decided to get back into guitar around the end of 2019 after a 35-year layoff, I actually already started to take a documented, disciplined approach after wasting a few months cruising YouTube. But TAC has brought that to the next level.

Now, I play every day and play at roughly the same times each day and have a specific, targeted exercise to facilitate the practice which helps a lot.

As a result of TAC, am I getting good? No. Am I getting better? Yep, and I can see the progress more on a weekly/monthly, vice daily basis.

When you first encounter some of the more challenging TAC exercises, you can be overwhelmed, but then you keep at it and by the end of the week, you can really see the improvement. It might not be perfect, but the progress is visible. That is a nice sense of accomplishment.

Listening to and soliciting input from other TAC members is a big plus as well. Not only does it expand your knowledge base, but they can also pull you back from the edge of the cliff when things in guitar land just aren’t coming together on a given day or with a particular exercise. TAC members form a Great, Supportive Community.

4.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?

A space heater in the winter just to take the chill out of the old basement, and a dehumidifier (an absolute basement necessity here at the Jersey Shore) in the summer. And yes, I monitor to keep humidity between 40% and 50%.
