1.) How many days per week do you play?
I play a minimum of 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, generally doing the daily challenge with some warmup before hand. I like the daily challenges as they help build basic skills. Once I’ve finished the challenge, I generally spend a little time noodling & working on a particular song I’m trying to dial in. At the moment it is the Weight by the Band.
2.) What time of day do you play?
Generally it is between 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. after I get home from work. It is part of my daily unwind from the work day before dinner.
3.) Where do you play?
I take my guitar out to the screened back porch (affectionately named Shipwreck Cove in keeping with my renaissance faire pirate lifestyle). If the weather doesn’t permit which isn’t very often, I play in my mancave / spare bedroom where most of my guitarsenal resides.
4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
Before I had a routine, my playing was hit or miss, meaning I picked up the guitar less frequently & didn’t have near as much focus in my playing.
Developing a routine combined with the daily challenges has given me more confidence in my ability & I am already seeing some improvements in areas I hadn’t developed as much before.
Now instead of beating myself up for not playing enough, or as well as I thought I should, I am learning new skills, developing better pick control, timing, & generally enjoying my time more with my guitar.
Instead of feeling like a job I feel more like I’m having a fun escape from everyday drudgery.
My wife has even noticed, I’m playing new things as well as recording myself more & joining in on virtual open mics more often.
5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
Typically a beer accompanies me out to the Cove as well as my cat. After playing, I usually relax with a cigar & enjoy some camaraderie in the forums.
