Here are the files for how I play the song. One document has the chords and lyrics, and the other has the picking pattern. I hope this works for you.

I should note that I use the barred F chord. If you don’t do barre chords, you can use the mini F. I have not tried the song with Fmaj7 but you can try that if you want… It is a folk tune, and I’m not entirely sure if it was originally PPM that penned it or not. That being said, you can interpret that song how you want (Joan Beaz, and classical conductors made entire careers of interpreting other’s music after all)

Keep in mind that picking patterns are tool to sculpt with, not rule set in stone. Picking patterns are like most things in music and are maleable you can cut and paste them however you like to get the effect you want. The only rule is what you have heard before "If it sounds good, it is good" The pattern I use for "500 miles", and for several other songs is 2 patterns I glue together that are extreemly useful for slower songs in 4/4 time. I originally learned them when I was a kid out of a book that was an anthology of folk tunes that my dad had. That book is now lost in his garage somewhere. I will show the 2 original patterns over 2 bars for the different chord shapes then the pattern "glued" together that I use. That way you can get the most use out of them. The Idea of the alternating base applies here as it does in the "Book Chuck" strum. Keep in mind that guitar was for a long time an accompanyment intrument, that these patterns are accompanyment to voice or other instruments that are used for melody. There are a TON of different picking methods. the patterns I show are how I play them with Thumb, Index, Middle and Ring.
