  • Sunday VWA 500 miles

This song came to mind during the Saturday VOM which had a train theme. I hadn’t heard this song since I was a kid, and thought I would give it a try. It has about as much polish to it as I do in this video.
I changed up the melody a little bit so I didn’t have to screech to get the high notes and changed a couple of chords to match.

I had an incredibly fun time at the weekend VOMs thanks to all of the performers attendees, and especially the hosts/cohosts. Really a great way to get a pickup at the end of the week!

Nice one @Alfred 👏👏👏 Loved the picking pattern throughout the chord progression – as usual, your finger style playing is awesome 👍👍

I loved this 🙂 Changing the melody and chords to fit a singing range is a great skill, and the fingerpicking pattern sounded great. If you lead them, they will follow! (the hobits, that is).

Would you be willing the share the tabs/notes sheet of your modified version? This sounds like a lovely song to play on a cold winter night; I’d like to add it to my long-term wish list. Maybe by the time the winter comes around, I’ll be able to play it.

I will try to get them together… not so much tabs as the song and the chords. I will try to tab the picking pattern, which is really 2 glued together. I will post them here when I have done so, I have to get my 10 in this morning, and get kids round for school first.

Here are the files for how I play the song. One document has the chords and lyrics, and the other has the picking pattern. I hope this works for you.

I should note that I use the barred F chord. If you don’t do barre chords, you can use the mini F. I have not tried the song with Fmaj7 but you can try that if you want… It is a folk tune, and I’m not entirely sure if it was originally PPM that penned it or not. That being said, you can interpret that song how you want (Joan Beaz, and classical conductors made entire careers of interpreting other’s music after all)

    Enjoy!!

I just had the silliest thought… even pattern picking fits the CAGED system 😛
