Recommend a guitar tuner
Posted by Moonhare on July 3, 2021 at 11:03 amAnyone got a guitar tuner they really like? I bought an, admittedly cheap, clip on tuner at the start of the course but to be honest it isn’t that accurate and I end up tuning by ear quite a bit.

I used to tune by ear all the time but then I would be off from Tony’s tuning. Since I got this one, I rarely tune by ear anymore.
-
I agree, I really like my Peterson tuner. I like that it has different tunings built into it.
-
Thank you for sharing, I am happy Moonhare asked the question, I may end up getting a Peterson StroboClip on.

I have a Peterson StroboClip HD as well and I love it! My wife finds the display a little busy and prefers the Snark brand clip-on tuners. She has a Snark Super Tight HZ. Both tuners do a great job!
-
Thanks @ted_h . Looks like a couple of contenders coming out of the comments here. I’m not worried about whether it looks busy as long as it works well but I’ll check out both.
-
Snark is great, probably can’t be beat for the price. It was recommended to me by my musician friend and the Sweetwater sales rep. Always accurate in my experience.
-
Always good if recommended by someone you know as well as the people trying to sell it to you @jimmychandler 😀
-
IME and from others I find the Sweetwater reps to be very honest and reliable. Their reputation is their major marketing tool.

In the end I went for the Peterson and I have to say it is great. So easy to position on the headstock, nice clear display so thanks for the recommendation @ted_h .

@Moonhare – I too am impressed by the Peterson Strobe. Not just great reviews by fellow TAC members but those on the Sweetwater site. Had a basic inexpensive Snark that stopped operating after about two months so I have used phone tuner app. Thanks to your posting I ordered the Peterson this week and told my wife it’s your fault! 🤓

I just ordered a polytune clip from Sweetwater for $39. Should be here in a couple of days. I usually use an app on my phone but decided to get the poly tune.
-
I have a “Snark” clip on and I paid $10.99 U.S., and I’m really happy with that🤩 Works well with alternate tunings also😎

Looks like there are few brands coming up again and again here so thanks for the recommendation @Bill_Brown . It’s on the shortlist to check out.

I too, am partial to the Snarks..but I found this at a local music shop…it is rechargable and I don’t have to try to hunt down Snark batteries. https://www.amazon.com/Avantelik-Guitar-Ukulele-Violin-Rechargeable/dp/B0716YJ83Q/ref=sr_1_52?dchild=1&keywords=rechargeable+guitar+tuner&qid=1625423409&sr=8-52

I think the technology is great anymore. I remember having to try and tune my guitar to a pitch tuner back in the day…could never get a guitar to stay in tune. Think that is why I kept putting the instrument down so many times until a few years ago.
-
I remember those awful plastic pitch pipes from school! Eurgh… glad we’ve moved on since then.

I have two sets of D’adarrio strings on there way to me too. Hoping they’ll be here when I get home from work. Enjoy!

I downloaded a tuner off my IPhone app store. It’s called insTuner. I think it works well. I usually have my IPhone with me, so I always have access to a tuner. Best of all it was FREE, my favorite 4 letter word.
-
Free is always good! Perhaps there is an android version too although I still like the idea of a clip on tuner for when I pluck up the courage to get the guitar out on stage.
-
I have several tuners but I almost always use an app on my phone or iPad as I always have it with me. Also a metronome if I want it. Cheap and convenient so I’m with you Cadgirl.

I really like the Silver Snark clip-on tuner. I also have a DigiTech plug-in tuner on my pedal board, but that is much more expensive. I would get the Silver Snark, they are the best bang for the buck and I have found them to be really accurate.
-
Thank you for asking the question, I enjoyed learning about Peterson StroboClip tuners.

@VictoriaTACTeam the forum has eaten another reply. This is actually the 31st post — the 30th post disappeared after I edited it to attach a photo.

@Moonhare , trying again and hopefully this time the post survives. 😁 I have a couple of the $10 Snark tuners, and they do well enough when quick and dirty is good enough. It often takes some fiddling to get things dialed in even after they say “all good here!”
This app seems to be a little more reliable, at least for me, and since the phone is pretty much aways nearby, it’s reasonably convenient. There’s probably an Android version if that’s how you roll.

I’ve had issues with posts going missing. Wondering whether to type them in word and cut n paste afterwards?
As for tuner I do like the headstock style and certainly if I start playing live, however if I plug in I have an app called Gig Performer which I am using as an FX rack and has a built in tuner which fills the screen of the laptop and also has a metronome so thatxs great when I’m connected via a guitar lead.
