  • Focus on Guitar accompanying my singing

Posted by Rocco C on October 29, 2021 at 12:19 pm

First, I want to say that Tony is an incredible teacher and the presentation on this website is truly amazing. Bravo! I have been enrolled since June and have worked my way through the 30 days–slow, I know. My goal may be different from other participants. Ultimately, I want build enough mastery of chord progressions and strumming to accompany myself when I sing songs. How can I concentrate my focus in this area.? Thanks!

Thanks for posting this! I had been looking for this information. Is there more for learning how to sing along to strumming?

While you are learning the chords and rhythm you can just hum the melody until you have the lyrics memorized. I’ve made the mistake of trying to learn to play the song while reading the lyrics and this is far more difficult, because you’re not just reading but synching the words to your playing. Doing this while learning a chord sequence is extremely hard to do, especially for a beginner.

Singing and playing together is hard. They are different skills and you have to have at least one of them engrained so it is automatic. It took me 12 months to be able to play and sing a few simple songs. For songs that had complicated rhythm patterns it took me 2 years.

Pete’s suggestion to hum is a good one, it is much easier than singing and helps you develop the right rhythm, after humming it for a few weeks I will then start singing it in my head, and then after another few weeks will sing out loud. It something that you need to practice regularly, just like you practice the guitar.

I wonder if I can find some songs with simple chords on here to play to. I like the lessons but I actually mainly want to accompany my singing nicely.

Not so much here for songs. Songs are used in instruction but the point is more teaching and learning guitar. But there’s a pot full on YouTube, eg. simple like Lauren Bateman which complement rather than complete with TAC format.
