  • Stepping up my guitar journey

Posted by Cadgirl on December 7, 2021 at 3:59 am

With the New Year right on top of us I am stepping up my guitar playing. I am going to start playing minimum of 2 hours a day (at least 5 days a week). I am going to start recording my songs so I can listen to them and hear where my mistakes are. I want to get myself into an Intermediate level by this time next year. I have been listening to some of the “Play for Us” tunes you guys (and gals) post and they are awesome. I’m getting there, 1 year. Now that I said (typed it) it, it’s out there. I can do this. Wish me luck everyone.

Good luck @Cadgirl – That’s a big commitment, but you can do it! Just remember that if life happens to interfere in some way, it is okay to deviate from a hardline 2 hours.

Thank you @Loraine , I think I can do it. I have been increasing my time playing for the past month or so. If I stick to 5 days a week that will be a minimum of 2760 minutes. I can play catch up on the weekends if need be. If I don’t set down goals for myself I start to slip. This summer I plan on sitting on the front porch rocking the scene till I have all the dogs howling. 🙂

Good luck with that @Cadgirl but remember to not OVERcommit. 2 hours a day is a long time if you’re just playing for yourself/practicing. If you fall behind don’t try to make it up, just let it go and don’t stress out. Your playing can improve with a lot less time than that (if you focus) but I understand the wanting to play for hours thing too. Main thing? Have fun!!

I have been doing an hour a day for the last few weeks, pushing it another hour will be good for me. Especially recording myself to see where I am lacking. I’m looking for a 12 string and I just can’t justify buying another guitar till I start playing better.

        Cadgirl–

You said– “Just can’t justify buying another guitar till I start playing better”…..

That’s where I’m at with the 12-string I mentioned the other day. Upon re-thinking buying it, I reasoned that at my point in my guitar journey, it would almost be a sort-of “distraction” in learning to play the 6-string I have, here in TAC.

I don’t know if there’s a different “learning” – (different techniques, lesson-plans, etc)- with a 12-string, that I would have to search-out, or if the TAC lessons could also apply to a 12.

Anyway- I passed after all. Your reasoning nailed it for me.

Thanks- (and my wife thanks you also😉).

Awesome goal @Cadgirl, and you CAN do it! I work full time and I practice/play a minimum of an hour on weekdays and two on the weekend. Like @SoCal_Ian says it is a long time, So I break it up into 20-30 minute slots. It’s now about 6:30 am and I’m going to jump in the shower and get ready for work. But I’ve already put in 30+ minutes. I wake up around 5:10 make coffee, have breakfast and get to it.

Have fun, and remember to STRETCH before and after.

Thanks for touching base with me @Michelle-PSL . I retired a couple of years ago, so I have all the time in the world to do my hobbies. That is why I figured I could go with a longer playing time. Yeah, I know there are going to be times that I can’t get it all in. That’s ok, as long as I’m close. If I can get in at least a 1/2 hour in the early morning I’m usually ok for the rest of the day. I can finger-pick a couple of songs now, but i want to get better at it and get the rhythm down better. If I can do that, in say….. 10 months to a year, I think I deserve to buy myself a 12 string. Now that will be fun!!
