Working up a new original called “The Counter”. @Branman is helping me once again with production (grateful as usual for all his support and wizardry!).

On the table now is the harmonica bit. Would love input on:

    1. Leave it out and stay with just the basic guitars, bass and drums

    2. keep some of it but do not overlay harmonica and vocals

    3. Keep it as is

Any additional input is always welcome !

    Thanks

So this is my first post on the community forum and I don’t know much about music. 🙂

    1. Love it as is; and

    2. One alternative: Maybe pull a little bit of the harmonica out of the first verse. It covers up some of the vocals — and it feels like I’m just getting to know your voice in the first verse. In the second verse it seems like you use the harmonica as more of a highlighter, and that works great.

Thanks for posting it. Sounds terrific.

Hi @TMutter , the arrangement sounds nice as is, but leaning toward @DianeD ‘s alternative. In fact, I wonder how the arrangement would sound if the harmonica was used only during the chorus, and perhaps the ending as well🤔? I would definitely keep some harmonica in it.

The basic track is solid – absolutely no problems there – but bringing in a feature instrument like the harmonica does elevate it and bring a texture an tone that creates a really beautiful lonesome atmosphere. @DianeD has a good point about the arrangement. I’m not so bothered by it in the first verse but from a purely songwriting point I would always leave something in the tank for later and saving this to bring added texture later on would do just that. Great work! Really enjoyed this. 🤘😎🎸 – Darren [Moonhare]

great point about leaving something in the tank to build some energy for the ending in what is a very slow tempo laid back song.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and provide input!

Great storyline. I agree, buildup tension before introducing the harmonica, (although I loved that you added it). It sounds great on the chorus. You are a good songwriter, musician and humble human. That’s all there is to it. Great that you shared this.

Thank you for the very kind words. I have played with a new production version that adds in instrumentation over the course of the song and I think it is better. I look forward to sharing the final version.

I think at one point your were going to play one of my originals “Fabric Of You” at a memorial service. Did that happen ? I did release that song on my EP and it has a cello incorporated which I think is a nice add. You can listen to it on:

    Keep it going!

TMutter, I like this tune as is! Like how the vocals, harmonica and guitar work complement each other. Thank you for sharing!

I’m Diane, too! I like the guitar accompanying the vocal. I love harmonica but maybe as a bridge? That way loud and clear, its mournfully by itself! Reminiscent of “The Gambler”. Ballads speak volumes in a few minutes!
