Taylor Guitars – Hug Your Haters, Original song
Taylor Guitars has a YouTube show called “Taylor Primetime” every Tuesday night at 9PM EST. In their first “season” they asked for song submissions for a segment called “Hug Your Haters” – the segment was where the hosts would take a hateful comment or email, and then address it w/ a “hug”.
Taylor asked the viewers to write a song for the segment, for a potential contest in 2020.
I just happened to be taking Fretboard Wizard at the time, and was learning about chord progressions in keys – w/ Tony P explaining when to use a major key or minor key.
I picked a minor key so that it would emote sadness. This song is inspired by the songwriting of Ruston Kelly. The song is about an angry and bitter man, who complains about everything. Then after a hug (the first chorus), his life is changed and he starts to see things in a new light.
The lyrics are in the description of the video, and poke fun at the shows hosts.
I composed to the guitar part to be very minimalistic, i feel like simple progressions are more beautiful and timeless.
I added an extra corny touch (which is my personality) at the end.
So although it’s a quick jingle, I actually did put a lot of thought into it, hope it “brings a smile to your face”!
