My daily small win posting- sounding out a song.
Posted by Brian2501 on January 24, 2022 at 9:00 pmMy daily routine is to first sound at a song, and write down the notes, practice a few songs I am working on and finishing off with the daily challenge. The daily challenge makes me pick up the guitar every night…it is the cornerstone , and is essential to the routine. From now on I am going to list the song I sound out. If any of you like or know the song I would love to hear your version.
Tonight it was Waltzing Matilda (in C, I think).

Sounds as if you have a routine that is fulfilling, and I too use the Daily Challenge as my cornerstone. Great wins @Brian2501 . Also, I know Dancing Matilda, but I can’t play it or haven’t tried. Maybe I’ll look into it.
-
You sound quite disciplined but make sure to keep the fun elements alive for perseverance sake.
-
Thanks Albert…I really am not a disciplined person…but I have to admit that this program has instilled an uncharacteristic bit of routine in my life.

Today My Lady D’Arbanville – beautiful melody! Tried to integrate with backing track since I sounded it out in G but that did not quite work.

Sounds like a great routine, Brian. Good for you.
Love Fire and Rain. Not familiar with the others, except Hava Nagila.

Thanks Rando…for me it is a nice routine because I rarely feel like I score a win on the daily challenge…so it is satisfying to pick out a tune…which is not usually that hard to me. Noting it is a bit tougher, and then even harder is finding notes to harmonize… and noting the timing forgettabout it -haha but the daily challenge gets me going-enjoyed tonight’s!
I would recommend giving it a try to train your ear and see if you enjoy it.

Well done on your songs routine. I’d say the small win on the daily challenge for me is really just trying to do it (at whatever speed) and not feeling disheartened if I can’t get it. I play about 50-60% each month at normal speed but that is up from about 20-30% when I started last April so it does start to filter into your technique. It will also turbo charge the playing by ear thing you’re doing and bring new ways to interpret those tunes into your playing.

Thanks Moonhare…yeah I do the daily challenge religiously and could not agree with you more. But I have been doing them for over a year, enjoy a lot of them ,they do challenge me and open my mind.
But my small wins are checking out that pile of dozens of songs I noted
Glad you are seeing progress.. and thanks for reading my post.
Cheers!

Today I sounded out Paris en Colere…a big hit for Mireille Mathieu in the 60’s which brought back memories of my youth.
If you like a powerful version of an Edith Piaf kind of voice check her out. Not for everybody but I love it!
-
When I’m 64 was much harder than I expected… lots of sharps no matter what note you start on.
Still have to work on the bridge

Hi Brian
good idea to sound songs out
could you give us some more songs you like, and especially songs that could use some of the licks we are learning
Thanks, and keep playing
Docteny

Hi Docteny
Thanks for the kind words.
Sadly at this point I have yet to be able to combine what I have been learning at TAC with the other things I do on guitar…My sound outs are very basic…just writing the notes on the melody line and rarely adding chords to it. The act of listing on this page every song I sound out is to reinforce the small win for me. But it would be great to see if others want to give it a try too!

Good for you @Brian2501 for taking the Daily Challenge a step forward. I think this added to your routine is going to really help you get further in your guitar journey.
-
Thanks Cadgirl,
Yeah I hope it develops my ear, because i would love to eventually be able to play songs on the fly.

Tonight’s song sound out was Bambola…another big hit in France and Italy by Dalida and Patty Pravo in the 60’s. I heard it on a preview of My Brilliant Friend on HBO tonight and the it brought nice memories.
-
@Brian2501 ,I took your idea and applied it to the ‘jamming songs’ course. After getting the strum down, I backtracked and figured out the melody or the little riff Tony tosses in. Thanks for the idea. It’s now part of my routine. 😉
-
Very cool…maybe inspired by you to take that course…an area which I have not really gotten into aside from weds sessions.

Today’s tune ….part of My Boy Bill from Soliloquy in Carousel. Lots of fun…3/4 of a win due to not quite getting the whole melody down. Maybe I will get another 1/4 after I do the Daily Challenge
