  • Fretboard Wizard or 30 Days to Play?

Posted by AnneN on January 29, 2022 at 3:46 pm

    Hi All.

I just joined and am finding my way around.

I’ve never played guitar before. Should I start with the 30 Days to Play or Fretboard Wizard or a bit of both each day? I don’t want to confuse myself with too much information but I would like to progress with good skills in the most efficient way.

    Thanks.

    Anne

Hi @AnneN and welcome to TAC and the community! If you have little or no experience with the guitar, I would recommend starting with the 30 days to play.

Loraine is correct recommending 30 Days to Play as your first course. I found under the “Skill Courses” category – Your Next Six Chords – a good one to complete second. If F chord shapes are difficult (it is typically the most difficult one since it requires barre positioning), take a look at the Q@A at the end of the Fretting Hand Toolbox skill course for more discussion related to problems new guitarists face.

Remember this should be fun above all else

Regarding Daily Challenges – don’t get discouraged by them, some are too difficult at first. You may find the Friday ones easier as they reinforce chord shape and learning to transition from one to another.

You should look into the Stretching for Guitar course early on too. That really helps prepare you to physically play longer.

As Tony says just picking up your guitar for 10 minutes is important. That amount of time usually far exceeds that limited timeframe in reality once you get going each day.

Plan to attend the live zoom Progress Party Tony hosts quarterly- next is April. The Acoustic Tuesday every week helps to keep us engaged too.

Hope this helps you to further navigate your TAC journey.

@AnneN wishing you many hours of success and enjoyment. Welcome to the TAC Family!

    Welcome to TAC!

I took the thirty day challenge at first and completed it in about a week or two. (I’m retired) and then jumped into fretboard wizard after that, then worked on the skills that caught my fancy. Then went on to the daily challenges and just did the best I could. That and the acoustic Tuesday show and the 90 day show were great motivators. TAC and picking up the guitar at 69 years old have been one of the best things I have done for myself. I love it and Tony and all the great people from around the world I have met. I started TAC November 20, 2020 with one of my goals to be to play for the residents at my mother in laws retirement home. I played 6 songs there two weeks ago thanks to the progress made with Tony and also the weekly VOM’s.
