  • Has Anyone Cleaned Their Strings?

Posted by Terry B on January 30, 2022 at 3:47 pm

Not sure if this adds to my geekiness or if it’s just because I have a new guitar with new strings, but I’m trying to preserve the beautiful sound that both my guitar and strings are singing out to me at the moment and after seeing Dunlop’s string cleaner and conditioner, can anyone clarify if this is going to help or make things worse.

Help by obviously cleaning finger oils and dirt if any off of the strings. Or will it make things worse for me as I have phosphor strings which I’m led to believe that due to the price, helps to keep all the finger oils and crap from clogging the string up.

Here’s my point, will the string cleaner actually remove the phosphor or protective agent from the strings which firstly means I’m wasting my money getting phosphor strings to start with and secondly will I be changing them more often than first thought, due to the “phosphor” supposedly making the strings last longer being removed with the cleaner.

Please<font face=”inherit”> note that I always wash my hands with soap and water prior to picking my guitar up and always have done</font>

    <font face=”inherit”>Kind regards,</font>

I wipe my strings when done and if they are paricularly grungy and I don’t want to take the time to change them I will use the scour side of a dry sponge and go up and down the stings a few times and then wipe with a cloth. I have never used a string cleaner but I don’t spent too much on a set of strings. I use non coated D’Addario EJ-16’s.

Thanks @Loraine I was wondering about this myself. The strings on my GS mini look a little yucky. I just added the guitar cleaner to my amazon list.

I usually just wash my hands if they are oily and dont worry about it. Santa Cruz strings are coated and seem to last alot longer than normal strings before losinf their tone.

I am curious if the string cleaning clothes sold at guitar stores have a special chemical on them or are they just regular cotton rags

Hi @That_Guy and thanks for your thoughts, but I’m using D’addario which are also coated, I’m just trying to think of ways of producing a fresh sound as much as possible 👍

Did you try any of the special guitar string cleaning cloths or just a regular cloth I’m curious if there’s a difference

Hi @That_Guy and Firstly I ordered both the Music Nomad Microfiber Guitar Detailing Towel as well as the Nomad string cleaner that @Loraine kindly suggested. They both arrived today and answering your question, the Microfiber Guitar Detailing Towel feels really lovely and soooo soft.

So once I’ve finished playing, I’ll use the Ernie Ball Polish that I have i’ll keep the cloth that with it to one side as spare and because i’ll be using the polish which might accidentally catch the strings, i’ll be using the Nomad string cleaner afterwards. Finally I’ll use the Microfiber Guitar Detailing Towel to buff my guitar

Sorry but I had to keep editing because computer jargon kept appearing within the text
