Finger position for A chord
I have just seen the 3 ways suggested to place our fingers for the A major chord and I would like to share another way I use commonly when I switch from D to A major chords. That way, the 1st finger doesn’t have to move 😉
1st finger on 2nd fret of G string
2nd finger on 2nd fret of D string
3rd finger on 2nd fret of B string
I am sure some the followers are already using it and maybe it is showed in a future lesson but, just in case….

I think I am weird. I fret the B with my pinky, the G with my ring finger and the D with my middle finger. For me, it was too crowded using my index finger on the D, and could not get consistent sound. I don’t think my fingers are fat either? It also allows me to switch to the E chord. And if the song is a back and fourth E to A or vise versa, I can leave my index finger on the first fret of the G string for quick chord changes. Similar to what Tony does with the G to D switch. He leaves his ring finger on the third fret of the B string when switching.

That’s one of two ways I finger the A major chord :-). The first way I learned was using just my index and middle fingers. I DO have fat fingers.

I am still trying to find the best fingering of this chord for me.
The barring of DGB with first finger certainly seems the easiest for me, but lose the high e (muted) with this approach, but definitely easiest.
The traditional shape, I wind up with Index finger too far back on the D, and wind up with buzzing, and trying to squish everything forward can get it to stop buzzing, kind of.. Tony’s alternate away works, but still a lot of squishing and… using Middle, Ring and Pinky seems to get them all to fit nicely and consistent sound, but then lose the free pinky to do other things down the road so hesitant to train that one.
Have been trying this approach as well (d7 shape in this single fret), do seem to be able to get reasonably consistent sound without needing to smush the fingers too much, and has the added benefit that the index finger doesn’t need to change strings between D, A and E chords.
