  • Our nicknames here in TAC

Posted by the-old-coach on June 8, 2022 at 7:53 pm

Been thinkin’ about starting a thread about how we came up with our “name”(s) here in the TAC Forum. There are some interesting ones indeed!

I hope it doesn’t get booted on account it’s not really directly related to learning guitar…..

    Or is it?

New joiners of TAC as well as those who have been in awhile have almost come to “look out” for posts or threads started by certain recognizable names- and gravitate to reading them– they KNOW the information is good and the help and advice is sincere. I personally have quite a number of folks in here I keep an eye out for their posts- good stuff— and very helpful in my guitar journey.

So……… the names!– I wanna hear about ’em! I hope maybe others are interested?

I’ll start out– and TRY keep mine short……. “the old coach”…….

I was a girl’s fastpitch softball coach for YEARS– from about 10 years old up to college aged. Relative success overall- took quite a few teams to State-tourney levels- but never really came close to the brass ring.

In a similarity to learning guitar– (see how I did that!)- I learned lot from other coaches ahead of me—– AND from my players. The student learns from the teacher– but– teacher ALSO learns from the student…. it’s a dance….we both learn from each other— even as we win, lose, agree and disagree.

So anyway, as I was trying to get “out” of coaching- (that’s hard)- there was a young guy with the right attitude and perspective who came along- that I coached alongside for one season. He became the New Coach, I was then, “the old coach”.

There ya go– that’s my “handle”.

    Alright— who’s next?😀

I like the idea a lot. Long ago when I lived in Nashville I got my first Harley at age 57. It was a Sportster. I rode Harleys til I was 67 at which time I decided “ I ride no more forever”. From this come my moniker of Mrfredsporty.

In the beginning days of TAC, my handle was simply: CarolM, and in those days the system allowed duplicate screen names. (This was a bit confusing if your name was John or Bob) For a few years I was the only Carol in the house, then there was a few more but still only one CarolM… By this time there were about 40 members named Bob, and it was becoming very difficult to figure out if you had the right person. This is one of the things that was addressed when the TAC website got re-launched last year. At that time everyone had to think of a new screen name that was unique because the system no longer allowed duplicate screen names.

I stuck the number 3 before my last initial because to me, the 3M was my mental shorthand for a major third. (I am particularly fond of the use of a Picardy Third, which involves finishing a minor key song or a phrase with the corresponding major chord, out of key). The last chord of Classical Gas comes to mind. It’s in key of Aminor, and it ends with an Amajor chord which turns the whole emotion into “happy” at the end of a sad minor piece. So no, I do not work for 3M, hahaha!!

The “Stillhand” part of my screen name is a gift from @jumpinjeff who has called me by that nickname pretty much since we met, way back in the beginning days of TAC.

Ever since I first saw you play Stillhand, ( @Carol-3M-Stillhand ) I have been trying to emulate your conservation of motion. It is a thing of beauty.

    Cadgirl here 🙂

I have been an automotive CAD designer for well over 20 years. It’s a field that has been very good to me.

I’m fairly short (5ft 8in) and played a lot of competitive volleyball. The opposing teams were always surprised when this short little guy got up above the net for a block or a spike. My friends and teammates came up with the name 40 years ago and it has stuck ever since. Most people think I’m a pilot. 🙄

My Nick name of Jumpin was from a comment a friend of mine made while we were playing together: He urged me to calm down, relax, he noticed I was really jumpy when I played and my fingers were jumpin off the fretboard….Then in TACs early Days I was the only Jeff S and lo an’ behold another Jeff S joined so to avoid confusion I went with Jumpin Jeff fairly confident another jumpin jeff was not coming aboard. I was not wrong. No wonder I was enthralled with Carol-3M-Stillhand’s conservation of motion.

Nobody ever liked me enough to give me a nickname. Or, I never lived in one place long enough. Or,… I don’t know,… I guess I could have gone with justmike. 😎 (Too late now. It’s been taken.)

I always felt mine was fairly obvious as it’s based upon my name and geographic location. 😉
