GS mini koa
Posted by Dage on June 11, 2022 at 5:47 pmHello gang… so finally did it! bought my Taylor GS mini koa.. .have a couple of questions, I’m a little disappointed in the plastic plug and also in the volume, treble and bass buttons.. any comments.
Love the case, love the sound, love the look. The neck on mine has various shades of wood… Any comments, or concerns…. appreciate them all. It was a lot of money.. just wondering why Taylor puts in plastic combonents?
Thanks

The GS Mini is a neat little guitar. I’m not familiar with the plug for that model? Regardless, I don’t think there is anything to be concerned about. Taylor makes a fine guitar and stands behind their product if you run into any issues. I’m thinking about picking up a 314CE and getting the GS Mini for $199 during the Taylor Days promotion.

First, @Skyman , you can’t go wrong with a Taylor. Really. They are one of the few manufacturers I would say it doesn’t matter what you buy. They are built with playability as one of the chief factors in mind. Not many people buy a Taylor and end up not loving it. Any model. Second, a GS Mini for $199? Wow, if you can afford it, what are you waiting for?

Hey @Dage ;
The “tell” is when you said “it was a lot of money”. I agree, that $700 or $800 is a lot of money. However, given the price range of guitars, that’s pretty darn cheap. The GS Mini is one of the best guitars you can buy for under $1000. At that price point all the manufacturers use plastic parts. When you have a guitar that looks that good, plays that well, and sounds that good, you have to make some clear, notable differences between it and guitars that cost 4 or 5 times as much. Consequently, you must pay over $2000 to get bone nuts and saddles… usually.
You get what you pay for, and what you got was a great guitar. It’s not a “showcase” guitar. Save up your pennies and pay $3500 to $5000 and you will have a “showcase” guitar. It’s all in what you want.
My most expensive guitar cost me $800. I have 2 others that cost $700. Then I have another 6 guitars that cost under $500. I love all my guitars and think they sound and play great. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Do I sometimes get a little envious of the very cool and special guitars that others can afford? Yeah, but I get over that pretty quickly when I pick up one of my beauties and start making it sing.
So my first “advice” would be to love your little GS Mini. And second? If you really must, go to Luthiers Mercantile International (lmii.com) and replace those plastic parts with the materials of your choice. The bonus would be you could learn some DIY guitar maintenance.

Thanks for the advice, it actually was 1300$ and I know that isn’t expensive for the quality of the guitar, I too have 4 guitars now and love every single one of them. Enjoy the day and keep playing!

I recently added a GS mini to my modest but growing guitarsenal, and so far I’m very impressed with the rich sound that comes out of that small body! Mine has the spruce top with Tasmanian/Australian blackwood sides and back. I love the look and feel of it, and can’t understand why some reviewers complain about a “tinny” sound. I traded a dreadnaught sized Epiphone for the mini – loved the sound of that one, too, but found it very hard to play it comfortably. My one big concern with the mini is that I have struggled to play fingerstyle and the narrower neck makes that even more challenging. That’s okay, though, I’m pretty sure there are more guitars out there waiting for me😄

I agree with you GerryB56, I’m liking the rich sound too, especially when I have it plugged in. Also agree that there are probably other guitars out there waiting for me as well! LOL.. can hardly believe I have 4 now, who would have thought. Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it!
