Flat picking
Posted by 1Dean on July 22, 2022 at 7:13 amDid the flatpicking skill course, Billy in the Lowground. I have been focusing on this for the last couple weeks. Speed and accuracy have improved greatly now working on the melody

Way to go! I just made my way through that one, too. Need to keep working at it as I feel confident it will help improve my string picking and sense of rhythm. But I know I’d get hopelessly lost before the 3rd bar if I tried to play it at a jam session now😆 Anybody got some suggestions for follow-up tunes to learn?

Friend of mine recommended Jerusalem Ridge.

Great win @1Dean ! I have been focusing on flat picking since joining TAC and the Flat Picking Skills course was one in which I focused first (in addition to the dc’s). I was struggling being able to play along with the backing tracks (I also became totally lost). What I ended up doing is starting out setting my own metronome at about 60 (sometimes 40!) and picking my way through the tabs with eighth notes turned into quarter notes and played it until I had it down. Then I would bump up the BPMs by 5 or 10 and did he whole thing again. Repaww we ares that until I could play them at 120 to 170 BPMs. This accomplished a couple things: it pretty much cemented the tab in my brain and got me to a speed at which I could play with a backing track at the slowest speed (the backing track is at 80 BPM say so I am plying the lead at 160 to accommodate playing the 8th notes).
Then listened to some of the professional bluegrass bands play these and learned I would need to get my speed up to 240! 😱.
Recently I found this cross picking lesson by Molly Tuttle and found it interesting and helpful. Keep picking! 🤘🎶🎸😎

Thanks Kitman for the suggestions. Playing everyday. I felt I was getting swamped and accomplishing little on the daily challenges while playing the same songs over and over. Don’t get me wrong, I still attempt the DCs but I put more emphasis on one thing, i.e. flatpicking for the foreseeable future.
