  • Starting to Journal Late and where skill courses fit in to everything.

I started the 30 day challenge, finished it, and then started doing skill courses. I would occasionally do the daily challenge, but lately, I’ve felt like I’m plateauing. I can tell my skills have improved since joining and I’m having fun (sometimes), but I also feel like I have nothing to show for it. I want to leverage my skills into playing songs. So I’m in a rut, is what I’m trying to say.

The other day I saw the journal down in the corner. I had completely spaced it! I want to start, but I’m at about week 13. Should I start over with the 30 day challenge?

I follow and understand the reasoning for the daily challenge, different kind of skill each day but where do the skill courses fit in? Are they to be done ON TOP of the daily challenge?

The journal seems to want me to ramp up how often I play but wouldn’t I have to play M-F to keep pace with the daily challenge?

What about the 10 minute thing? Is it just assumed you’ll play longer than 10 minutes after you’ve started rolling, or is it still in effect?

    Thanks,

wow great questions. Now here are essentially the rules. Do what you want when you want. BUT!….SHOW UP! yes it is assumed that you are most likely going to get hooked a little and will start doing more than 10 minutes. When you feel like an adventure do a daily challenge. Its all up to you. the other thing I would encourage is put youtube on your big tv and lookup beginning guitar songs for acoustic guitar. You may find.a fun easy one to play. there is no doubt that playing songs is a major key to enjoyment and getting the most out of your journey which you can share .You are on your way!

I didn’t think you came off that way. I appreciated your response.

Hey there @andysmith22gmail-com , IMO wouldn’t go back and start the 30 Days to Play again. If you know you played on those days and you “spaced” in marking them off, mark them off after the fact. I have done this in the normal guitar journal (the one we use each 90 day period). I play every day and do the challenges every day… however sometimes forget to record that in the journal. When this happens go back in the journal and I mark the daily lesson as done, and note what it was (ie. The title of the challenge). If I can remember a win from that day I will write it in. If not I will write I showed up and played. In the space to record time played I sometimes often leave that blank because I simply cannot remember when I started and stopped – however I give myself credit for playing at least 10 minutes, well… because I know I did! No prescriptions here – just sharing what Indomwhen I forget to “mark myself present”!😃

    Hello @andysmith22gmail-com ;

Wow, relax man, take a deep breath. Here are the rules:

    1) Play every day… or as often as you can.

    2) Have fun… this trumps every thing else.

    3) Use a mix of learning new things and practicing old things.

That’s it. So, how does TAC fit into that? Simple.

TAC gives you something to do every day to warm up and work on something new. Don’t spend too much time on that or you’ll become frustrated. It’s all about fun.

Then, move on, using whatever time you have left to learn a song or play songs that you already know. Or, stick on a backing track and jam out playing solos. Or play solos without a backing track. Or, jam out making your own rhythm, whether you record it so you can jam to it later or not. Just play for fun, that’s the idea.

So, what about all the other questions? Where do the Dailies fit in? Where do the Skills fit in? Ok, fair enough. It’s simple. You’ll know the answer to all those questions as you move along your own guitar journey. Right now you are playing as often as you can using skills courses? Then that’s cool, that’s your answer. At some point, you’ll be like: “So, what’s next?”. Well, the Dailies, that’s what’s next. Just something to make it easy for you to start the session every day. What do I do to warm up. What do I work on for a few minutes before I start playing for fun? That’s all. Simple.

So, you see, no one but you can actually answer those questions specifically. The answer is:

Warm up for a few minutes.

Work on learning something new for maybe as long as 10 or 15 minutes.

Play something that lets you get lost in your own sound.

You fill in the blanks. There are no wrong answers.

Oh yeah, the journal. Will it help you? Great, use it. I don’t. Never have. Probably never will. I’m not a journaling kinda guy. But the beauty of this cheeky answer is that I can change my mind any time I want and start doing a journal. Will it help? Probably. But for now, I don’t care. I don’t feel like doing it. Am I making progress? Big time. Am I having fun? Big time. So I guess it’s not a necessity though it will definitely help some people.

Thank you Mike! I do think I’ll do the journal. I believe it will provide some structure and some scaffolding.

I appreciate hearing your unique approach and your mindset.

That’s good, Andy. The journal helps many people. And for those who don’t choose to use it, how would they know what they choose if they don’t try it. I did it for the first couple of years I was with TAC. But I have learned what I really want in my guitar routine and where I want to go with my guitar journey. But journaling probably helped me figure that out.

As far as a unique perspective, I learned my perspective from Tony and this community, so I hope it’s not very unique. I hope I am accurately representing the unique perspective of TAC that has helped so many people build a guitar routine that gives them a truly satisfying acoustic life.
