true confession…..
Posted by Mrfredsporty on September 6, 2022 at 7:18 amI love this forum and all that is associated with tac, but Ive been feeling that I need to explore some more. So I did the unthinkable and joined an additional lesson based site. Im feeling kind of guilty and I have no plans to leave tac.As opposed to other sites including the one I just joined tac feels like a group of friends who care about each other and their progress. Have I sinned or become a Judas??? I hope not

I totally get it. Am very serious about my learning and progress. I really like practicing and do it daily. The real challenge for me is finding different avenues to get the info and resources to fill in the different gaps in my training. I spend a lot of time researching questions online, there’s so much available. TAC has some very solid areas of didactic strength. I’m very grateful for the contribution it makes to my education. There are questions I’ve been unable to get answers either from support or forum members that mandate that I look elsewhere for critical support to my overall learning experience. I still have a few areas of my development I’m trying to figure out. I have other sites I belong to that are equally important and look to find others to round out my educational experience as my guitar skills and knowledge continually evolve and improve.

McD you certainly said it better than me . That’s for sure

On a previous version of Acoustic Tuesday Tony listed sites that he enjoys and would, I believe, support your quest for knowledge without reservation.

No guilt required, Mrfred! TAC is awesome for daily motivation, inspiration and community support, for sure. But there are plenty of other sites that also provide great instruction. Some of the ones I’ve joined turned out to be somewhat “over my head” at present, but offer lifetime access so I plan to eventually catch up🙂 Others are more suited to my current skill level, and are relatively inexpensive for what they offer. Even if I don’t manage to spend as much time as I’d like on studying them, I have gained some valuable guitar knowledge from all of them.

@Mrfredsporty , TAC is only for learning methods, helping you along with what you can learn and do. I think we all want to learn how to play some songs too. I belong to another site myself. No shame.

Ty, CD.maybe it is showing that I’m spreading my wings a little

I agree with everyone who has responded thus far @Mrfredsporty . No need to feel guilty about seeking out additional information and points of view. I do this on a regular basis and have joined a couple other sites as well. It’s all good! 😎🎸🎶

Ha Ha yes no reason for any negative thoughts here. The guitar & music in general is such a deep subject that no single source could cover it all, On an acoustic Tuesday show a while back Tony introduced a few of his favourite online teachers. i think that says something. I would guess that most TAC members also have other sources for their particular interests.

I’m trying to identify and learn a graduated collection of acoustic blues standards from simple to intermediate to advanced that I can work on over time. I’ve not really found such a list. I’d like to start with 5 simple blues songs I can work on to get proficient and build a foundation of blues playing skills and knowledge. This gives me a list of musicians and their work that teaches me also about the history and evolution of the blues. Anybody know of such a list, have their own lists they’ve built or have suggestions for starting a list of my own?

Hello McD! I’ve been with TAC for about 4 months now, and have just lately developed a keen desire to start learning some blues music (and to buy a resonator, but that’s another story). Can’t help you with a list, but if by chance you’re interested in an online course, check out Udemy. They have a huge selection of guitar courses, including many focusing on blues music.

thanks for the tip on udemy
I subscribe to active melody. probably the most helpful site for me. Brian does an incredible job with his weekly lesson. basically writes a song each week that has scrolling tab, looping, and slowdown/speedup abilities and targeted at perfect level for me. might want to check it out if you aren’t already aware

I agree with you totally about Brian at Active Melody. I signed on there a couple of months back, but so far find most of his lessons a little above my abilities at present. But I have found several helpful hints on spicing up my playing with various embellishments, etc. No doubt I’ll be able to benefit more as my guitar knowledge and skills grow. I am starting on a Finger Style Blues course with Udemy, so we’ll see how that goes. Meanwhile I am finding TAC to be a fantastic program to encourage my regular progress.

To be well rounded, it is good to have input from many teachers. You can read books, listen to instruction, and learn new songs each from different sources. If you limit yourself to one site, one source, you’ll never know if the one technique is going to work. Just don’t give up on TAC. I return to this as my daily contact as health and family schedule allows. The forums after the lesson are filled with wisdom – even the questions or comments that cause me to think outside the box. We each must discover answers that enhance our individual journeys. I joined September 2020, connected with many new friends and have never regretted one moment…it’s always a joy, to be celebrated!!!😉

appreciate your thoughtful comments… still looking for a graduated listing of acoustic blues standards that I can start working on…to be able to have my own playlist to practice…I’m sure there out there somewhere… your warm and positive vibe is powerfully nurturing

Hello @Mrfredsporty ;
You absolutely are not a “traitor”. That’s ridiculous. However, I know how you feel.
For me, TAC isn’t just another guitar tutorial site. Tony helped me to become a guitar player, and no one else did that before or after. I owe him my acoustic life.
Now it’s true that Tony seems to have more altruistic intentions than many of the the other instructors. He has proven that his driving force is to share his love for music and guitar. However, this is a monetary world, so no one can separate that from the equation. I have given Tony the majority of the money I’ve spent on guitar instruction. I have a couple of t-shirts from other guitar instruction sites. I have at least a dozen of Tony’s t-shirts. I would never have spent the same amount of money if I hadn’t found TAC. I’m a tight wad.
But there are a ton of videos, for free, on YouTube that can and have helped me in my musical journey and my guitar journey. I even paid for another guitar instruction site because I thought Brian Kelly had a unique way of teaching like Tony and his instruction resonated with me. Justin Sandercoe is another guitar instructor on YouTube that many of us have learned from.
Yes, we need to be careful of using TAC to promote other businesses. That’s wrong. But Tony knows that music doesn’t exist in a vacuum. TAC may be our center, but it’s not our everything.
MG 😀
