  • Looking for a good luthier

Posted by Val on September 19, 2022 at 2:23 pm

Hi everyone. I’ve been playing a Taylor GS Mini for 7 months.

    I like the sound.

I love the courses. An issue I encounter frequently: the frets seem too high.

Everything is going fine until I encounter sessions that require slides.

I do have calluses, but I find I frequently miss timing when sliding over more than one fret. Also I shred some of my skin, sometimes to the point I can’t play for a day or two.

I am looking for a luthier who is good to ask about changing or filing the frets and then adjusting the guitar to compensate for height change. I just don’t know if it’s worth the cost, I’m also aware not all luthiers really do good work.

Does anyone have an opinion or a recommendation for a good luthier in San Diego County, near Encinitas Ca would be great.

Or should I just keep plugging away and hope I develop my skill to the point slides no longer cause harm after only 20 minutes of practice?

    Any input is appreciated.

Hi @Val , the closest luthier to your location that I could recommend is in Las Vegas.

His name is Gil Rosado at Rosado Repair

875 E. Silverado Ranch Blvd. #2060, Las Vegas, NV

      (702) 721-2689

Probably tons of great luthiers in Los Angeles, I just don’t know them.

I have always found that a good setup is worth the money. If I picked up a 200.00 guitar and did not like how it was set up I would have the work done. Be specific with what you want. It will help you get the best result. Additionally if your fret crowns are off, getting them leveled and crowned will change everything for the better.

Hi @Val , Have you tried looking on Taylor’s website for factory authorized repair shops near you. I know I can do that on Martin’s website, I would think you should be able to do it on Taylor’s site also.
