Mastery
One of the things that Tony talked about that got me to start this course was the description of being a guitar ‘dabbler’ and what that meant. It reminded me the book by George Leonard called Mastery, a life changing book for me. But, I had to admit that when it came to guitar, that I was a dabbler. Started in my teens, stopped playing…started again in my 20s, 40s and 50s….never stuck with it. I lost my wife last year to cancer, and needed something to keep me busy, especially during the winter months. So, I decided to pick up guitar yet again and stick with it. I started on my own using a gazillion different resources, some better than others. As the song say, ‘check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords’ and I do know a good number of them. But, zero ability to really play much of anything. Then, I came across Tony’s course on Facebook and checked it out. As I said, the ‘dabbler’ comment pulled me in. I started with the 30 day challenge to build a foundation and am off and running. I’m really enjoying it. I’m learning something new everyday and look forward to what’s around the corner, in the forums and in the daily challenges.

Your story is shared by many of us. I bought a lifetime membership a few years ago and the consistency with a plan and purpose has made me a real guitar player. But I don’t kid myself. I’ll never be a Master. But that’s not my goal. It is just to have fun expressing and feeding my soul through music. Congratulations on finding strength, comfort and joy through your journey.

@JEJ Welcome to TAC, and congratulations on completing the 30 days to play course. I was in a depression during COVID with the isolation, and I was the sole caregiver for my mother (who lived with me) with dementia. I needed something that was fun and enjoyable, as well as social and just for me. I had never played guitar before joining TAC, and I was at a loss as to how to start. Luckily for me, Tony’s marketing caught my attention almost immediately, and I was drawn in. I’ve played daily for nearly 3 years. It has been a lot of ups and downs, but mainly ups. I still get excited about playing. I lost my mother 1 1/2 years ago, and just as TAC was there to bring me through COVID & my mothers dementia, it has been there through the loss of her too & the fact that I’m still working at home full time. So glad it’s here for you too.

Thank you for the kind words. My silly goal at this point is to be able go into a guitar store and play and not embarrass myself if I see a guitar that I like. It’s a low bar, but doable I hope. I’m going to be out of town for almost a week and unable to take a guitar with me, but I do have a practice tool called a shred stick that should help me maintain things a bit. Looking forward to learning from everyone here and helping others, however unlikely that seems at present. Take care.
