Stretching done correctly is one of the best tools I have to improve dexterity and precision. Stretching done incorrectly can cause injury as you noted. Two words changed my methods from harmful to beneficial: Silly Putty. Treat those guitar muscles (fingers, hands, wrists, forearms, shoulders and neck) as if they were silly putty. Slow stretch and it will stretch safely for miles. Fast stretch and it will snaP. It is a matter of stretching for release and not stretching to feel the stretch.

@nickcirelliyahoo-com I have to agree with @jumpinjeff that stretches done correctly are you best defense against hurting yourself. If you aren’t comfortable with the stretches on TAC, or if you’re unable to know what’s a good stretch or bad stretch, I have 2 suggestions. 1. Stretch if it feels good, and if it hurts in any way, immediately stop. 2. If you find it difficult to stretch, consider going to see a physical therapist.
