Just saw that a long time TAC member emphasized staying focused on the challenges we face on a daily basis and perhaps not spending time going back to the previous songs and lessons we failed to complete… I now understand that I am going to see the classifc “R n Roll Hoochie Koo again” and “Old Man”… and that it is probably best to concentrate on the now or 2024 beginning with Bon Jovi… Is this the approach that most members take with Tony’s method of teaching? I am new to this forum and new to TAC. Here I am posting at 11:00 pm on New Years day…BC Canada. Wishing everyone the best!

These benchmark songs are a new twist to TAC and so even we old timers are learning how best to fit them into our guitar journey. If it’s a song I know (like Hotel California), I will focus on it for the week and between times come back to it outside my TAC practice and try to add on layers. If it is a song (like this Bon Jovi song) with which I am less familiar, I’ll just focus on the week and move on until the benchmark comes around again. I will also be aware of the song and watch it on YouTube and become more generally familiar with it. Like anything it depends upon how much time you have or want to pour into it. If it is a song I don’t particularly like, I’ll still learn the techniques because those techniques will bleed over into other songs I do like. I get OK at some songs and others not so much. I’ll never be good like Tommy Emmanuel. At the end of the day it is all fun.

    Welcome from Texas.

I rarely if ever go back. I just continue with the next daily challenge.

I always add a song or two onto the end of my daily practice to learn songs that I’m interested in learning. Not to say that Tony doesn’t have some good choices but I have others further up my list.

With the Dailies, I like to get to the point where I “feel good” about the effort I put into that lesson, then move on. No individual lesson is gonna change anybody into a George Harrison, but thousand of them– that you learned a little from each– will make HUGE difference– over time– as your overall guitar-knowledge and experience grows.

I have a guitar-friend- (who has taken LOTS of private lessons over the years)- who can play maybe 6-8 songs REALLY well. But, I believe TAC’s greatest thing is that it teaches us how to learn to play ANY song, because it teaches “all-around” skills and knowledge.

There is a HUGE difference between the two philosophies.

Just wanted to extend a word of thanks to all who provided me with feedback regarding staying focused on the current challenge. I think I can still manage to practice some other material as well that I like and gain from both. Being a senior who is more or less semi retired I can pick my times…loving this experience!

And that right there is THE KEY dmac53. Love what you are doing, have fun, and make it your own journey. As “someone” once said: “If it sounds good, it is good.” 😉

Right on my brother, tonight more on Bon Jovi and then Hoochie Coochie and later Cohen’s Hallelujah…my wife is painting or doing some art piece so I got the green night for the night.😄
