Not using tabs
Hi Folks
I find that I don’t really use the tabs. I know how to read them. But I just find that I don’t really need them in order to remember what I’m supposed to play. I also have a strong ear, and I can pick things out.
Do you all think it’s important for me to use them, if I can do the exercises without them?

@lollyt If you have a gift if being able to retain the lessons without having to look at the tabs that’s fine, as long as you understand and know how to read the tabs.

I will go to the tab as a last resort if I can not get it just by listen/watching. It has been a while since I have needed to use them. I could never read as fast as I wanted to play so it was my tool of last resort. If you are, or have developed that skill or want to have it and see how it is improving your playing I would continue to use the tabs. If not, you can always come back and nail it down later should you need/want to.

Everyone learns differently. I can’t follow Tony, when he is describing finger placement so the I always look at the tab and instantly understand the lesson. Whatever works for you.

Hey Moose408 — with regard to finger placement on tablature, do we determine which fingers to use on the frets? I haven’t had the opportunity to “get to know tablature” yet, only saw it briefly when I started the 30-day course and at that point Tony really doesn’t say which fingers to use, just finger the string on the fret. Just curious.

I do look at the video to determine which finger goes where if it isn’t obvious. The tab isn’t going to give you any indication of which finger to use.

Don’t be afraid to just “see what’s easiest”. There are different ways finger chords. Example– some people play an open A with three fingers “in line”, while others play it in “triangle” form. Also, some play it using index/middle/ring, others play it middle/ring/pinkie- (which makes it “Barre-able” and therefore moveable).
Also, some sites or teachers will emphasize using whatever fingering allows for the easiest, most efficient movement to whatever the “next chord” is.
Bottom line- there’s not necessarily a “you always have to do it this way” thing……

I mostly refer to the tab but I think I know why. I played trumpet from 4th through 8th grade, and for that you are always reading and playing from sheet music. So even at age 57 when I started playing guitar I think my brain was pre-wired to look at spots on a page in order to figure out where to place my fingers.
