This might be a stupid question but…

I joined TAC at the beginning of the year. I’m enjoying it and having fun. I’ve even started more than one of the 5-day challenges (by accident; there seems to be more than one set labeled March), but I haven’t finished February, due to hitting a wall on some of the techniques. So, Tony sends out his Monday email starting a new lesson, and I’m still on the previous week’s/month’s challenge.

So here’s the stupid part. I sent away for an inexpensive book on making chords easier from another guy selling a guitar course (they’re all jumping out of the woodwork now), and his course has easy chords plus a lot more, with actual songs, etc., and I’m tempted to get it, kind of to get another perspective on things. Does that even make sense to do? I’m not giving up on Tony by any means; I like his style of teaching, aside from moving along too fast (the lesson videos too-I know how to slow down the play-alongs). I think someone here did say they were taking more than one course but maybe they’ve been at this one for a while?

Two things. The thought on the Daily Challenges are that you spend at least 10 mins on them each day, but that you don’t perfect the technique the first time through. You get exposed to it and give it a try. It will come back around again in several months and you will get further through the lesson the next time as your skills improve. You may feel like you aren’t making progress but then discover you’ve come a long way when the challenge comes along again. It’s an interesting approach to teaching guitar.

I supplement TAC with another online guitar course that has an actual teacher that I can interact with and ask questions. It is a very structured course that teaches the 7 fundamentals of guitar. Some I find quite easy because of the things I’ve learned here on TAC and others Tony never covers (like reading notes, and aural training). It’s been a good compliment to TAC. Personally I would be hesitant to purchase a book to teach me guitar but that’s more because of my learning style, I’m more of an aural learner and don’t learn as well from books.

Yes, I get that about being exposed to a technique and practicing it for ten minutes a day. In fact, the time I spend on the video lesson I don’t even count as my 10 minutes. As for books, I’m more of a visual learner, so I like to see something in front of me that I can refer to several times until I get it. So hearing Tony explain the finger positions on the video briefly only does part of it for me. I do view it more than once, but often he spends too much time reiterating how important it is to have a routine and show up every day (which is important, and I’ve never missed a day of practice) but then he rushes through the lesson. It may be a technical issue, (or my crappy old laptop) but the video skips and hangs, and sometimes the audio, so I miss stuff, and I have never been able to follow his fingering positions. Most of the time I view the lesson, then sit down with my printed tab and work through it while the lesson is fresh in my mind.

That said, I’m committed to this program, and to learning guitar. I was just wondering if anyone else here found other programs/materials helpful to augment this one.

I too find it difficult to get finger position from the video and always have the TAB open at the same time.

Hi Barbara, I have pretty slow internet, even on a good day, so Tony buffers quite a bit. My workaround is to hit the pause button then go and make a coffee – by the time I get back the video progress bar has crept up enough for me to play the whole video uninterrupted. I’ve had real issues with keeping up with the fingering, I just slow down to half speed. Not ideal, but hey-ho.

    Hi Barbara,

Nothing wrong with exposure to multiple genres and skillsets with learning music. Most people learn from different sources, it’s good to have more than one string to your bow 😉

As long as things are not conflicting (i’ve never experienced conflict with learning guitar tbh) and that you are not overwhelmed in what you do (ie you can keep a good focus) then it’s always good to learn different things to keep you motivated 😉

Hi @BarbaraM So glad you’re enjoying the TAC program and Tony’s teaching. Tony teaches foundational guitar, which are skills that will carry over into whatever genre you decide to learn to play and apply the skills in. It is expected that you will go out and use your newly learned skills, which can be through books, supplementing with live lessons, using online sites to learn songs, etc. we don’t discuss specific sites onTAC that are direct competitors of TAC, out of respect to Tony. However, if there is a site that has just songs, then I see no harm. One such site would be ultimate-guitar.com. Many people utilize YouTube to learn different things. There are many sites that offer free lessons and information. You might want to look into some of those. You can message me if you want to discuss further.
