Repeating challenges too often?
Posted by BarbaraM on September 3, 2024 at 10:52 amI know there was a snafu a month ago when we were supposed to be learning Landslide but ended up with a technique challenge from the Skill Courses. Now, looking ahead 2 weeks from now, there is another blues challenge that we just did VERY recently. Is this going to be a regular thing? And the same challenges that are in the Skills?

Hi Barbara,
yes i’ve noticed that the lessons are repeating quite often nowadays… not sure if TAC is planning to add a new batch soon, as i am not seeing the older lessons that were on here anymore.
You are welcome to visit my bookmarked favourite lessons, as you will see a few pages (24 of them) of older lessons still available from my list. You can click on them, and favourite them if you like, so you will have a list to get back to when you feel like doing something different

Oh thanks for that list, Beatrice, many of them I have not seen. I’ve only been here since January! But I do “favorite” every lesson I do, even the ones I don’t care for the style. Who knows, I may want to try it again someday.

you’re welcome Barbara. I am glad the list can benefit you, and others looking for something new to play 🙂

Challenges repeat for sure, but not really that often. I keep an Excel log of each one, including dates. Typically (yes, there are exceptions) they repeat in the 10 – 12 month range and sometimes not at all, so not really as often as you might perceive.

I know the Benchmark challenges repeat every 3-4 months, but what I was referring to is a particular 5-day Blues challenge that is also found in the Skills Courses section. I don’t have it dated, but I am pretty sure it was the one that got mistakenly substituted for the Landslide week, last week of July. I’m sure it was just an anomaly. Now that we are in September and can see what challenges are coming up for the month, it’s coming again week after next. Maybe it was originally supposed to be scheduled this month, and maybe they take a skill challenge once in a while and throw it in the monthly 5-day challenges to keep everyone’s basic skills up. But because of the mixup in July, they could have put in a different skills challenge for this month. So I will be taking that week to revisit some FW work or do an older challenge.

I’m going to keep it real. I’ve been on TAC since March 2023. Last fall Tony’s stopped doing the quarterly review celebrations online and then shortly thereafter stopped doing his weekly Acoustic Tuesday show on YouTube. There’s been little in the way of anything new over the course of this past year and it’s certainly not the community it first seemed to be when I first started. I don’t plan to renew my annual subscription when it comes up in March. Tony seems to just be milking it for what it is and not putting the effort in to this platform that he previously did. ☹

Tony added a new little household member about the time Acoustic Tuesday ceased to add new episodes (the Acoustic Episodes are still available and they are still relevant). We all have adjustments to make to keep life balanced. I do see new content and exploratory concepts. The idea of benchmark songs is one such concept. The Song Vault or Jam Clubs are vestiges of earlier concepts that are no longer pursued but still available. There is a Fretboard Wizard 2 now that is improved. I don’t think it is accurate to say Tony is milking past content but he has retained past content and continues to make it accessible while adding to it as life allows. I see him experimenting with a little new YouTube content. Recently there was a review of a John Fogerty interview about writing Proud Mary that was fun. Life has seasons and moving through them requires adjustments. I appreciate that all these add to my guitar journey. I’ve appreciated your comments and contributions to the forum. I respect your need to move through the seasons of your guitar journey too. I afford the same grace to Tony (and Levi or whomever is behind the camera) to adjust and keep the fun in it as best we can. Guitar Geeks Unite. (another vestige).

Yes, I understand the family issue; however, failing to invest time in to the TAC platform isn’t going to increase and retain members. I have to imagine this is his primary income source so not something to ignore. As to videos, I check his YouTube channel. Since Acoustic Tuesday ended, there have been 5 video additions. One 8 months ago, and 4 within the past month. Better, but not a lot for nearly a year. Part of what made the platform special in addition to content was his engagement with the membership. That part has definitely been greatly diminished.

I will be upgrading my membership to lifetime. For the cost of 3 or 4 private lessons, I get 5 challenges a week and dozens of other skill building videos along with the input and encouragement of fellow TAC members!
There is still is a lot for me to learn here, even if Tony never adds one iota to the content. But I see that he is posting new videos. He just added one to the Benchmark Forum a couple of days ago. TAC isn’t my only source of learning, but it is my main one.-
I did too and no regrets. Also, if you want to enhance your musical talents I would recommend reading “The Music Lesson” by Victor Wooten. I’m only 1/4 way through, but I’m learning to identify the various musical elements in song creation such as observing the various chords, transitions, tone, feel, dynamics, etc. One lesson is not enough. I’m happy for the benchmark weeks since I can dive more deeply in a song. It seems to me, you’re a person who loves music so I believe this book will not disappoint. Find it in the library first, read it and maybe you’ll be like me and purchase it for your permanent shelf. Good luck!

I didn’t mean to post here, was replying to one of the replies. Forum won’t let me delete or just leave and emoji. Only a couple of months in but I like the pace so far.
